Wise words from Waorani leader Omanca Enquiri from Ecuador's Amazon. Omanca was one of several Waorani women who were plaintiffs as part of their communities' historic lawsuit and victory against the Ecuadorian government, protecting a half million acres from oil drilling. Enquiri has vowed to continue fighting to defend her people and the Amazon, and in July, Enquiri traveled to the United Nations in Geneva to share her people's struggle.

Small feet running through the forest. With sweat running down their rosy cheeks they jump into the water and swim across the river in a hurry. When it’s fruit season they’ll be high up in the trees picking anything edible while jumping from one branch to another in laughter.

But not everything is play. They also hear the elders talking. They feel their concern. They understand. Their home needs to be protected. They know that they are the future guardians of their territory and their home, the Amazon rainforest.

Ecuador's Ministry of Environment took a pro-oil stance by filing an appeal while an apparent blunder sidelined the Ministry of Energy in court. We now await a three-judge panel's verdict and stand strong with the Waorani in their urgent struggle to defend their lives, their rights and a forest we all depend upon.
