AMBER CHOREOGRAPHER ERA???
Amber Glenn should play Svetlana's girlfriend in season 2
The amazing Spider-Woman, issue 32
Summary: Amber has been out too much lately fighting the Sinister Six, you know with great power comes great responsibility... But does it mean losing your girlfriend?
Tags : angst (small), Spider-Woman!Amber Glenn/fem !Reader (no description but reader referred as gf once), some comfort, hurt Amber
Words : 1.3k
an : inspired by the popular monologue of MJ to Peter from the amazing Spider-Man issue 32 (if I'm not wrong) but I changed the reaction and outcome:3 I think it's accurate to a spider hero behavior? Lmkkk
"Could you at least look at me? Please?"
Amber does, slowly turning around until she's facing you, if looking at someone still works behind a mask.
Because her mask means protection, for her identity and directly the people she cares for, not cowardice: wisdom. But in this moment, when she refused to take it off in front of you—her person, her home, the only one who can see her as she truly is even without the mask—is it still wisdom? Because she's not protecting anyone but herself in this moment. She doesn't want you to see her, because you don't only look, you see.
If she took it off, you'd see her lies, the pain she doesn't want to share—can't share—and the fear she can't afford to show. She can't let you read her when her feelings are the last thing that matters tonight. Not when all the Sinister Six were out there, undefeated even after a whole week of Spider-Woman fighting them. After a whole week of your Amber risking her life fighting them. Protecting you and everyone else.
"Amber."
You took a step closer and she took one back, unsure, like a wounded animal, but you don't stop, your hands finding the hem of her mask before you pulled it off yourself. "My Amber, not the spider."
What you see makes you nauseous: bruised Amber, dark circles under her eyes, and a split lip, you're scared to see more skin. Your touch softened more when you cupped her face, what hurt most was seeing her holding back tears in front of you.
"I need to go."
"Hush."
"I have to."
You know you couldn't really ask her to stay, to give up the city, her values and duties, everything that made her the hero she was today. But wasn't she yours first? Was it really that selfish to want her safe? By your side?
"You need a break," you tried, not letting go of her, "just a few hours, please—" She stopped you by placing her hand on yours, closing her eyes. "I am taking a break right now."
"Stop it," you can't help but sob, you didn't want to, but it's knowing she's right, in the worst way possible, that hurts. "A meal, a shower, some sleep, please; let me at least check on your wounds."
"What if, when I sleep, someone needs me? I'm already losing time right now... someone might need me—"
"I need you!" you continued, your voice breaking. "Am I this insignificant to you...?"
"That's not..."
"Losing time? With me?"
It's selfish, you know it is. But what else can you say? Or do? Let her go like this? You know it's part of her job, every time she left there was a possibility of her not coming back, but it wasn't fair, not tonight you couldn't accept it.
"Please, you have to understand, if I don't go back..."
"No, you have to understand!" You let go of her face, pushing at her shoulder angrily. "You want to go back out there? You can't even walk; I bet I could beat you in a fight, and I can't do a third of the things you can!"
"I can't just..."
"I know you can't!"
There's a silence; both of you understand the other, but understanding isn't always enough when nothing changes, when both are right.
"But... Amber...
You're going to die doing this. You're going to die in that stupid costume! And I know that there is nothing I can say to stop you from doing it."
She opened her mouth to say something, but you didn't stop.
"But I never in a million years imagined that I would be tossed off a bridge by a maniac or— or — or wiping your gunshot blood off my clothes so my mom doesn't see it! Someone is going to kill you."
Your voice lowered the more you spoke, hitching into sobs as you fell more into her arms with each words, head against her chest. "I— I can't do this."
Her arms slowly wrapped around you, careful as if you might just break more if she made the wrong move. It's not the warmth of her skin you feel but the tissue of her costume, the barrier more than physical in this moment.
"I... I had no idea you felt that way," she started, "I'm sorry... I never..."
She squeezed you a little bit harder, more for herself now.
"I never meant to hurt you. I thought the only way to protect you was by being outside... the more I could..."
"I was wrong... I was lying to myself... I didn't want to face the truth and have this conversation."
"Pushing you away seemed easier than risking losing you by being there... I was failing everyone when I was in the costume... I forgot how to be Amber... your girlfriend... I forgot how much I needed you, to be me, to... to remind me to think and accept that... I can't—"
"You can always try," you cut her off. Before she could say it, you knew what she thought, where her mind was going. "You do your best, I know that." You pulled back to look at her. "But you need to take care of yourself to save others. Please, just a few hours, let me help you."
She hesitated, you saw her glance at the window and for a second you thought she would slip away from you, disappear in a second and go back. But then she looked back at you, and finally the mask fell, not the Spider-Woman mask, Amber's. And you saw fear, exhaustion and despear, for the first time in a long time she allowed herself to share her pain with someone. She needed you to carry it with her, and that's exactly what you will do for her.
"...I think... I won't say no to some food, and water, anything other than Red Bull and cereal bars."
You chuckled even if it worried you, because at least she had accepted this, at least she knew she couldn't just be the spider. Amber wasn't just a part of her; she was Amber, and vice versa. The chuckle quickly died when you felt her suddenly losing balance, slowly falling against you, and it was with panic that you caught her, carefully laying her on your bed. "Amb? Hey?"
It's the faint mumbles that stop you from losing it. You let out a sigh of relief before kissing her forehead. "I'll get you food and water. I'll be quick."
For a few hours, she stayed with you. You took care of her, patching her up, feeding her, reassuring her, and holding her. For a few hours, she rested, she took a step back, had some sleep. And for a few hours it's the warmth of your girlfriend's body you felt next to you.
But it didn't last, couldn't last.
Before the sun could rise, she was putting the suit on again. You were sleeping until you felt the fresh air of the night on your face, making you open your eyes. You saw her ready to leave, she glanced at you and, when she saw you awake, she took a step closer, but you turned around in your bed. Because if you kissed her goodbye, you might not let her go, your heart might not survive it. Watching her leave was too much, and she knew that. She rested a hand on your shoulder, leaning down to kiss your temple, whispering promises you didn't want to hear, and then retreated, carefully closing the window behind her.
And just like that, Amber was gone again.
