I've wanted to ask for a while about the creatures that much haven't shown up in RATC yet. I love the cast we have, but that's a lot of Bokoblins. Kobb, Amber, Starenday, Abacus, Hisstin, Fennel, that one at the stable whose name escapes me at the moment...

Yet there's no Keese, Octoroks, Froxes, Constructs, Talus and Pebblits, Evermeans, we haven't really seen too much of the Guardians, the Satori and Bubbulfrogs, literally all the Stalmonsters... there could be SO MUCH LORE with the Stals. Maybe they're the animate remains of actual fallen monsters as a kind of holdover until the blood moon can properly resurrect them? (That silver that Zayl shot back for revenge? The rest of Kobb's group? AMBERRRR?)

Are there any plans in the works for them?

Sorry for the late reply, was still recovering from surgery and I'm finally at a point where I can sit at my desk for longer than an hour jhalhfkjsd

But the short answer is: there's going to be monsters that won't be getting a major spotlight like the main group, and that's okay.

When going into writing major plot threads I don't ask myself "am I going to incorporate every little piece of the Zelda lore and characters that I possibly can?". Instead I ask "will adding this allow me to create a more compelling narrative without diverting too much from the main story?"

Don't get me wrong, I like lore. But the story I am telling with my characters will always be the #1 priority and also what I consider the most when thinking of what monsters to really include.

Which is why I've focused so heavily on the more anthropomorphic monsters in the first place. A lot of the other ones I've sort of glossed over more feel far more animalistic/instinctual if that makes sense. In how they're presented to us in-game the Bokoblins and Moblins and Lizalfos and Wizzrobes have far more anthropomorphic behavior with their camps and battlements and how they interact with each other and whatnot.

Really, the reason I picked the main four monster species as the focus is because they have a very striking similarity to other fictional fantasy races. Bokoblins and Moblins are very much a sort of stand-in for goblins and orcs, Lizalfos harken back to fantasy lizardfolk like Argonians, Wizzrobes as the sort of magical imp-like creatures, etc.

A big reason there's so many Bokoblin characters is by design. It's meant to challenge the notion of "there's always a FUCK ton of goblins in every fantasy setting and they're all 1HP cannon fodder". It's why I LOVE Starenday's introduction chapter so much because that's when it realizes that its perceived weakness was a literal façade set up by The Calamity to keep them despondent and docile from defection. Because they're forcibly sent back to the Malice upon the slightest injury this narrative of "1HP goblin" is entirely fabricated - just like how often that very same narrative in other traditional fantasies write goblins as these "weaker" creatures that the protags can slaughter by the dozens. I don't think this narrative point would hit as hard if there weren't so many Bokoblin characters that have tangibly PROVEN how unbelievably strong they can be after defecting from the Malice.

And out of all the ToTK enemies, Horriblins I saw as like.......striking gold (literally) as they're designed as a sort of cave-dwelling miner mole-ish monster is also quite common in fantasy and I could find so many juicy narratives to spin off of their major inclusion into the story.

Which is why I devoted so much time to Recksin as I saw a very compelling story I could tell with it, that being this sort of "invisible underclass" that militaristic structures both horribly repress and completely rely on to keep feeding their hunger.

The Stal as is I've felt are a sufficient...darkness lingering in the peripherals given the stakes I've set. They're essentially the logical end-point to The Calamity's cruelty, a deeper layer of torment and hell. It is the ultimate depersonalization, the stripping of the flesh and the skin and the mind to turn a sentient being into one that only exists for war and violence: a perfect soldier.

And as for the other monsters you mentioned, what Ganondorf talks about Moldugas is how I set up the more animal-like of the monsters.

With a hefty slap on the hide, the Molduga came back to its frenzied senses, roared, and took off like an arrow towards the south. The rumbling of the ground quieted as the battered dorsal fin shrank before disappearing with a puff of sand. The rippling of the ground could still be seen - nobody moving a muscle until it disappeared in the infinite desert horizon. Ganondorf turned to Link, his back still firmly planted in a small dune. "We could once tame those," he said in his deep soothing voice, "We could ride them as effortlessly as the seals. Now, the Malice only brings them to rampage. Another piece of our culture lost to my curse - surely out of spite." Slowly, Ganondorf walked over to Link, his eyes still drifting towards the south. "While they were still wild and feral without the Malice, they're victims of Demise all the same. Perhaps give as much pity to them as the others, hmm?"

I do have plans to expand on this somewhat with a few of the monster species you mentioned, but which ones I choose ultimately ends with what I think fits the narrative best.

Like I hate to shoot down any ideas, but I also don't wanna feed the expectation that I'll be covering EVERYTHING lmao

If Ralera knows about it, it must be something that happens regularly and people are aware of it. So like. Does that just mean a Blood Moon? Or a special Big Blood Moon? Or something else entirely you don't want to spoil hsdhhds

More Wizzrobe biology!

Wizzrobes have been described in DotW to just be a solid mass inside, save for their throat and eyes. Also they can contort to a comical degree. But in chapter 15 Rezek said "I had to feel that wretched substance strip the flesh from my bones". I said it could have been for dramatic effect, but Magz mentioned that Rezek was probably not far enough in its arc to use a human expression like that? Just wondering, do they have some bone like structures or is it. a secret,,,,,

We speculated on how their magic works. Like. Why is it solid but turns gaseous upon exiting the body. How they are so stretchy. That kind of stuff hjsdjhfsd

And another important question: how are some of the words/names pronounced? We had a conversation about that on discord, specifically about Frifer and Rezek, but this also applies to monsters like Kehwees hsdhf

We also thought about: birdrobe feather dyes. I think that could be neato sdhfsjdf

But I figured it was only logical! The Northern Rito are more based on hawks so I thought it'd be fun to make a more seafaring sect of Rito as well! Of course we haven't actually SEEN any of them yet per se but I do like how Ralera mentioned trading with them during the spring seasons! Just adds a little more life into Hyrule and shows how The Great Calamity affected some parts of it far worse than others.

And yessssss I really wanted Ralera's scene to be both melancholic but cathartic that she finally left Rhodes' bum ass behind!!!

Honest answer this was like suuuuuuper early into RATC where I was still figuring out character speech patterns, monster anatomy, what Wizzrobes whole deal was...........a bit of an error there..........

Again, I really need to just bite the bullet and go back into earlier chapters and clean up a lot of it to make it fit more into how I've built my canon jhasdflhjk

Okay but I DO have an explanation for this............sorta

Some of it is actually future lore so I won't go TOO much into why Brine was a toucan-Wizzrobe and such but there is a reason and I am seeing very good discussion on it!!!

Like I really love the way both you and Magz talk about it ohhhhhhh I love this type of discussion!! :D

But as for Wizzrobe body anatomy the best way to describe them is that their insides are very porous, with the magical essence inside them acting as blood that contracts through their pores like how we have veins - which is how they move their body.

And their "lungs" and "stomach" and "throat" are all just larger cavities in their body that perform very similarly to organs but aren't like actual organs.

Their eyes could be classified as organs, as could their skin and flesh, but yea you pretty much hit the nail on the head with your bio major talk jkhasdflkhjkj

It's like.........god this is hard to like even explain IT'S UP THERE IN MY HEAD BUT IT'S CONVOLUTED....my fic's magic is essentially just the building block of matter and energy put into a gaseous yet stable form.

So Wizzrobes being created by the world's "magic" is essentially drawing the necessary elements from the ground they were birthed from and creating their bodies - which then allows them to collect said magical energy to grow and cast their elemental magic.

Hence why.........they come from split trees.......carbon-based you could say.

And their teeth are formed from calcified "leftovers" that come from converting their food into their magical energy - with other pulverized debris expelled through other means like their breath or tears or even their casted magic.

I don't wanna say Wizzrobes have the power of hydrogen fusion because that'd make them walking nukes...but it's very similar in the sense they're able to "create" energy from "nothing" when they're really just full of potential energy swirling around their bodies that they collect by living and need to expend it with their magic or else you get problems like with Ashen.

This is where it gets to the "Fantasy and Sci-Fi are functionally the same" type of deal jhkadsfhlkjjhlkd

And in the realm of Hyrule nobody knows about the periodic table so it's not like I'd have to explain it in my fic LMAO

idk if "Wizzrobes are single-cell organisms" would be the right way of putting it because I'm dying just typing that, but there's definitely that inspiration of how they can contort and squish themselves and hide their magical presence by receding it all into their core.

Definitely supports the "Rezek has a single brain cell" allegations /silly

This is how I feel waking up to RaTC fanart toby fox was so real for this

With Deltarune Chapters 3&4 coming out tomorrow, I have to talk about this Noelle dialogue or I'll go crazy

It's just..................this scene is gonna rip our hearts out once the game fully comes out, right? There's so much potential foreshadowing and symbolism packed into Noelle that this you might as well call it Chekov's Neon Sign. With her constant connections to the angel, her declining homelife, her missing sister, her desire for escapism, and her general vibe she fits in the story, I am so afraid something's going to happen to Noelle and we will have no way of stopping it - no matter what route we take.

So much of DR's vibes compare to UT's have this.......underlying despair. Where in UT the game gave you EXACTLY what you put into it, DR feels......doomed. There's an almost obsessive level of denial and coping I see with the general fandom on how much our choices matter. "Oh, it's just like UT where a character tells you something you're not meant to internalize as an unbreakable fact." And while, yes, the Weird Route certainly challenges that idea...it's not in the good way like UT.

You prove Flowey wrong in UT by utterly shattering his pessimistic "kill or be killed" mindset in the True Pacifist route. The Weird Route in DR is, again, more of a naïve denial. You're told your choices don't matter, so you feel like you must push against the very game to prove that wrong. And in doing so the game and everything around it breaks.

And it's no coincidence it all seems to revolve around Noelle. Especially when toby posted THIS way back in 2019 before we even knew what Chapter 2 will even be about (the song was even a reprise of Lost Girl like auuuugh).

You do not say things like this after writing a story where everyone makes it out unscathed. There's an almost sacred connection between reader and writer. Where the reader will ask "These characters will be fine, right? Everything will turn out okay, right?" and the writer must respond with "yes, yes they will" like a mother would comfort their child right as the nuclear bomb is about to land.

We both know the kids ain't gonna be alright. We just need to tell each other they will be. We have to.

Everyone loves to talk about Toby Fox as some cryptic master-trolling silly guy (which, to be fair, he very much is), but I can't help but look at how much love he puts into his world.

Through all the riddles and the shitposting, he cares SO deeply for these characters. The fact that he has gone on record to say he won't be making any official merch for the Lightners (aside from one very special exception) says that much. They're so much more than mere characters to him. I don't know Toby, but I know what it means to put an unfathomable time into characters that after a long enough time of sitting around in your mind they just become...another part of you - regardless of whatever their fate ends up being in the end.

Your love will become theirs. Their love will become yours.

There's only one ending, but there are much more important things than reaching the end.

This might be a weird question, but I'm kinda worried that I might be fundamentally misunderstanding the monster gender debate that happens in the "Rezek in Gerudo" part of the fic. Do monsters have a biological sex that has no impact on their gender (besides the Gibdo of course; I really loved that bit), or do they just not have a sex at all?

I ask because I'm trying to make a Fire Lizalfos RatC OC who identifies as female, and I'm wondering if her being biologically female would put her in a weird quantum state of being both trans and cis at the same time. Her name's Shivraal and she's a gremlin.

So, the non-Wizzrobe monsters do have sexes! And uhhhhh long tangent incoming because I love talking about this.

A big part of my fic is that their language doesn't really have gendered pronouns, and thus see the concept of gender vastly different than how Hylians see it. As of now their view on both gender and sex is very freeform, with the monsters having a wide berth of expression that hardly ties to their sex at all.

It's part of why I never tell anyone what sex any of my monster characters are (frankly I don't even have a canon answer myself because I think it's WAY funnier that even I don't know that). And it's also why I find it very interesting that, as much of a psychic damage as seeing my monsters gendered with he/him or she/her are, it kind of shows just how gendered our society is and how we see traits as inherently "masculine" or "feminine"

Another big aspect of my fic is that sex is a spectrum AND a social construct just as much as gender is. What we consider the sexual "binary" is merely lumping in common characteristics together - in practically the same vein as we do with gender. And there are so many exceptions that it's impossible to define any sex in hard, concrete terms without at least a handful of exceptions existing.

It's my favorite part of the Gerudo arc, how they talk about exceptions and how it's impossible to really compare monster sex and gender to how the Hylians and Gerudo and rest of Hyrule operate. And even among Hyrule it's not as simple as the Eurocentric culture that you often see in fantasy.

The Gibdo were one of my favorite examples of this because yes, you COULD compare kei and wei to male and female...but they see it as completely different from how the Hylians would see man and woman.

And then you bring Keene into the equation. What is a Chuvayze if you were to try to apply it to a human understanding of sex and gender? Sure, Keene uses wei pronouns, but would you even call it the same sex as the moth Gibdo? Sure they both have wings, but only Chuvayze can brood eggs - being a sort of insect queen equivalent. Not to mention the sheer size difference between the two.

SO to answer your question...

I honestly think it's fascinating to have a character like this! To come from a culture and language that's very fluid around sex and gender, and then to learn of the genders of other cultures and going "I think this suits me in a way that makes me most comfortable", and the rest of the monsters being very supportive about it because, again, they have such a vibes-based and fluid mindset that they're like "you're what the Hylians call a girl? Hell yea"

Like, most will keep their monster pronouns of 'tu' in their language and it/its in Hylian, as it's still very important to a great many of them. But after dealing with everything involving The Calamity, who are they to deny what someone is if that someone says they are to be referred differently?

I also love the idea of monsters basically sublimating every possible gender into their culture as they learn about it. Like "Oh that exists? Join the club, it's roomy in here"

And I love the name choice btw :3

ughhhh fuck chapter 170 was good. I love how you develop themes of prejudice throughout the course of the work with RATC (in my eyes) being an exploration of prejudice and its concequences, and it really inspires me as an author to develop my world deeper. How do you maintain themes through such a long work, do you have them planned far in advance or is it a “I’ll figure it out when i get to it”? Also, how do you write so consistently?

As for how I develop my themes thats a great question!!

Its honestly a little half and half. When starting RATC I did have a very clear goal of what I wanted the main themes of my story to be and the direction I'd take it in. But at the same time its important to almost "leave room for supplemental themes" where you dont force yourself down one specific path. Thats generally how I get my writing to feel so fluid is that I essentially have two outlines: short term and long term. Where I plan the next few chapters ahead while keeping the long term outline defined yet flexible.

There's a LOT I changed about the story since starting and there's so many unplanned plot hooks that were really "in the moment" ideas that I wouldn't have been able to fit in had I made my story outline "here's all the events that must happen and there's no room for sidetracking".

Because let's face it. As a writer...sidetracking yourself is fun alskfhalfn

Some of the RATC fandom darlings are a direct result of me going "hmmmm I think i have room to fit in this arc" those being Valry, Ire, and even Mar'ska.

And, by design let's you add those supplemental themes AND let's you strengthen your main core themes by adding even more plot threads directly connected to them.

It definitely helps that when weaving plot threads together it causes those themes to be interwoven as well. A lot of RATC themes revolve around rectifying and letting go of the past (which helps that those themes are BOTW's too alshfkalfj), but also revolve around breaking free of the systemic ties that bind you into violence and oppression, and actively fighting against prejudice - while having a focus on finding your identity and keeping a strong and healthy community to build and fight for a future you may never see for yourself.

That's like 6 different themes but they all tie together in their own ways! And in the story itself so many of themes themes overlap between characters, plot hooks, monologue that they become inseparable - impossible to remove only one.

And as for writing consistently...its like a muscle honestly. With time and writing more and more you become more accustomed to writing and it gets easier and easier by the week. When I first was writing RATC my chapters were MUCH shorter because I'd spend the whole week trying to draft out the chapter, get to Thursday, go "fuuuuuck I need to write a whole chapter", and then try to get a few meaningful scenes in. Now its gotten to the point where I can write pretty much a good chunk of the chapter every day :3

But its important not to force it. Sometimes you do gotta buckle down but I often imply a mantra of "write until you can't". Which doesn't mean write until you're burnt out, but write until you feel some resistance writing, mental or physical, and then go "okay, thats enough for today im not gonna push myself too far"

Some days you write almost nothing. Some days you write like 3k words in a creative frenzy. There's an ebb and flow to it and its why I never try to beat myself up for not "writing enough" on a given day.

I'm making more designs of the monsters but I don't remember what all their appearances look like

Rezeks scar is from removing the malice right? So frifer and ashen wouldn't have scars because they were never infected to begin with? Also do the other freed monsters have malice scars or just wizzrobes?

What color is everyone's eyes? I can't remember what sterres or sledges or recksins eye colors are

Does rezek have scars from fighting basically all the wizzrobes in hyrule?

How scarred up is everyone actually because they have been going through it

Also are there any other details that I should include?

Yes! Rezek's scar is specifically from drawing the Malice out of itself MUCH more forcefully than the other monsters.

For Kobb and the rest it just kinda...happened. The combination of their newfound self-identity and Malice in the same body was so wholly incompatible that it caused a rupture - and the weaker force broke first.

While Rezek still was suffering major cognitive dissonance from everything involving Frifer but still couldn't help but cling onto that idea of power it was promised.

And thus the Malice fought back when it had to use a little more force to jettison the Malice out :)

Pretty symbolic how Rezek was also the one who had to go through the most character growth on how the feelings of others matter too huh pretty neat little theme there :)

Here's a list of all the monsters' eye color btw :3

Kobb/Sledge/Zayl are all blue

Rezek's are yellow with that classic red tinge :')

Sterre's is a more full yellow, like a dandelion field

Recksin's eyes are sort of like a muddy orange color

Starenday's are deep green

Ashen's are snowy blue like just a tiny bit of blue

The Wizzrobe trio are described as "one dusty red, one deep blue, and one daisy yellow"

Abacus' eyes are bright red even without Malice

Fennel and Hisstin have heterochromia, green and brown, but Hisstin has the green eye on the left and Fennel has the green eye on the right

The Lynel's and Brix's eyes are dark-brown

AND AS FOR SCARS EHEHEHEHEHEHEHE

I'd say everyone has got some nasty scars but Zayl. It's got the scar on its ankle from its origin story, but other than that it's just............either so effective at what it does or fights at a safe distance that it doesn't often get roughed up....

......with the exception of its missing tail.

Sledge and Kobb specifically sure love to throw themselves into danger. Sledge has its classic eye scar from the Lynel-Talus fight way back in A Moblin's Rock Bottom (as well as all the other scars from nearly falling into a ravine). Kobb got real roughed up by the Lynel, including the hole in its ear, and was also nearly blown into a volcano by the Yiga. Rezek no doubt has scars running all up and down its arms from pushing its magic to a breaking point. Honestly it'd be real neat to show that even Wizzrobes sometimes cannot handle the sheer power coursing through them.

I remember in an ask you said that the ice wizzrobes were hidden away somewhere in the Hebra mountains......but where is it exactly? And how does growing up there differ from the fire and lightning wizzrobes? I know you said the isolation was what kept the ice wizzrobes in check, so it's gotta be much lonelier than what we saw at Hyrule Castle.

So I always imagined the Ice Wizzrobes holed up in the absolutely miserable Lomei Labrynth in the Hebra mountains

In my canon it wouldn't be an exact in-game replica and a little more like this huge imposing fortress that disturbingly resembles an ancient prison.

Since with the whole point of the Ice Wizzrobes is to hammer in that feeling of helpless isolation, they wouldn't even be given roommates. The only times they'd see their peers would be during the brutal training in the snowfields, mealtimes, and while going to and from their chambers. Their rooms would be made purposely barren and cold, stone slabs with tatters as their excuse for a bed. Where the Fire and Electric Wizzrobes are taught in cruelty from how they treat each other, the Ice Wizzrobes are taught it through example. They're taught that cruelty is the only way to earn power.

Their isolation is also what keeps them dependent on the Elders and The Calamity. Punishment is essentially solitary confinement, breaking them into obedience just for the most meager of approvals or praise - just to feel anything but nothing. It's also used as a "taste of what awaits should you fail The Calamity" to really sell the point.

I plan on having a scene eventually where Sahpira talks more about it but.........that's for another chapter ;)

fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck hang on my Malician is very off the cuff so lemme try to come up with something uhhhhhhhh

So "Sta" in Malician is meant as a less violent word for “to break”. Softer, like emerging or rising. I can imagine that for Wizzrobes "sta" would be essentially the same meaning for "birth" for them since they literally rise from the ground.

So rebirth would then be seen as a cycle, considering the Wizzrobes obsession with cycles as well. We have the word for circle in "run". Rebirth being seen as a circle of birth, being born again.

So for Wizzrobes it'd be Staren = birth and Starenrun = rebirth

I honestly love how it sounds because it almost has that repetitive cognate that would invoke the ideas of rebirth.

Which, in hindsight, makes Starenday's choice of its name REALLY funny because imagine it meeting a Wizzrobe and it's like "why tf is this Bokoblin named birthing" when it'd mean "sprouting" for the other monsters kjhlaljhkds

It's just really fun imagining little language barriers even between the monsters speaking the same language due to their starkly different upbringings heehee

For winter/springtime uhhhhhhhhhhh

I already have the word for snow as "ash", so for winter I could see the Malician word a "arrival of snow"

Like how spring would be a "arrival of green"

So the infinitive "to bring" in Malician I haven't come up with yet so time for my classic "conlang off the cuff" because that's what writers do lksjhafd

I think "enta" would be a good word for a general arrival, based on the similar Hylian word "enter". I really like how lore-wise a lot of Malician comes from either onomatopoeia or from Hylian cognates - showing that even when they're enemies the Hylian languages still has influenced how the monsters themselves talk throughout the centuries. Plus it aligns with real-world culture and languages how we share many common cognates. Plus it makes my job easier aheehee.

So Winter would be Ashenta (snow arrives)

Spring would be Crenta (green arrives, green being "cren" deriving from both the Malician word for ground, since the ground is often green, and the Hylian cognate for green)

Summer would be Fernenta (burning arrives)

Fall would be Brenta (dirt arrives, also associated with their word for ground. Also fits in with Lynel exiles called "bre-fen" as the tips of their tails get thrown on the dirt after being cut off. A more literal form of walking with your tail between your legs lol)

I like how the "opposite" seasons have similar structure too. Winter/Summer being longer words because they feel longer and Spring/Fall being shorter words because of the same logic.

(and this would make Ashen's name a double entende because although its literal translation is "soft snow" it's arrival brought on a whole new season ohhhhh I'm so smart I'm so smart)
