My Oscar watch started this week since it’s not likely I’ll be able to do the AMC Best Picture Showcase this year. I recently found out that club volleyball my girls play in has no regard for the Oscars or the Super Bowl and attends tournaments ON THOSE weekends. Yeah, I know sounds crazy, huh (unAmerican?) because it’s like they have no idea these are important holidays for the country (at least in my country). Hey let’s book a tourney on Christmas or Election Day! Anyways, I love my girls. The Oscar nominations this year make catching up fairly easy as most will be available to rent before the big day. I’ve seen Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, Roma, and most of the Animated Feature category already and I expect Black Panther to walk away with some Oscars. I just need to complete my viewings to nail down as many categories as possible. I usually just shoot to watch the best picture nominees but this year I’m going for as many as possible. Even the foreign ones if I can get to them. So this week I watched First Man, which landed NO major category noms but did get 4 for sound mixing, sound editing, visual effects, and production design. In categories where First Man is competing with other films that are heavy CGI I don’t see it walking away a winner. I’m not much for oversharing details about movies as I don’t like to spoil for others, but this film is about Neil Armstrong and if you don’t recognize that name and what he’s done then this movie is right up your alley. Touching drama, hold your breath action. It’s a well made film. I’m a little surprised that Ryan Gosling didn’t get a nod at Best Actor. The visual effects of space flight and landing on the moon were exceptional. It’s too bad that in this heavy batch of fine films nominated this year this film couldn’t even crack a director nod for Damien Chazelle. Tough break for a film providing a glimpse into American patriotism at a time of civil unrest but hey who wants to hear about that?
