More and more students wanted clothing that was not only practical but also identified themas serious students and athletes regardless of whether they were playing on the field or not. Adopting the established Letterman sweater was an obvious choice.
The letterman jackets were brought to the college campus when women collegians borrowed their dads, brothers and boyfriends. This did nothing to establish the letterman jacket beyond the campus walls but when the girls started to sew on their own college initials, badges and emblems the Lady Letterman was born.
As the sports culture grew among women collegians the Letterman was the perfect uniform and marked a real turning point in the creation of women’s college style as it represented athletic ability, success, competitive strength and college spirit this was a new passage and one to be deeply valued.
Letterman sweaters became so deeply entwined with campus rituals and traditions that united colleges individually and collectively.
