What do we want when we ruin each other? / I’ve done terrible things and I still want to know.

American Nightmare at the Magic Stick in Detroit 2.20.20
American Nightmare is celebrating 20 years. It just so happens to be 2.20.20 on a pretty bitter cold night in Detroit. American Nightmare is accompanied by Ceremony. This show is probably going to last a little over 3 hours with maybe an hour and 45 minutes of music if that. So I only expect an aural lashing my eardrums most definitely need. Ceremony is a double-edged sword of post-punk and early 80s inspired hardcore. I didn't expect the first part and afterward, I definitely didn't expect the crowd to open up at the beginning of the second song. Speaking of unexpected events, security body-slamming a guy onto the hardwood floor four songs in, it’s just like the old days! I’m enjoying the show with a beverage as people are getting a little too “touchy” closer to the stage. I love it, just not for me at the moment. It's like a trip into late 80s nostalgic movie soundtracks and also a homage to Washington DC. So for some reason, the security guards are not accommodating people getting on stage at a hardcore show... so am I in the 80s? I was barely in existence then. Regardless, not dodging the fists and feet of Ceremony fans has given me a very solid first impression. 1000% unique and inspiring weirdos perfect for this crowd. I love this shit.
I made sure to get upfront after the Ceremony crowd dispersed. I would stay to the left of the stage for the next hour. That is, until getting smoked in the head a few times. The best thing about getting punched in the back of the head is that it knocked some sense into me about deeper things. Hardcore shows are like days worth of meditation all in a few hours or even, moments. I completely understand why some people go fully spiritual. Not for me. Anyway, American Nightmare is a legendary hardcore punk band. 20 years went by incredibly quickly. Just like this set. And like that, I’m eating Sgt Pepperoni’s and uploading photos to my computer in my room. Thankful for this experience. There is no way in hell I’m getting punched and taking feet to the head without a camera. It’s true catharsis and such a release as a lover of this music and this band specifically. Legends in my book. Check out the photos below! They just put out a release on Deathwish INC. You can get it HERE.
