Every time I think I draw something good, I show it to my mom hoping she’ll be proud of me. She always says the same thing, “I hate it. All of your potential is wasted on junk like this.” I’ve tried nearly EVERY style. I spend hours trying to replicate styles and create the best piece of artwork I possibly can but she always says it. If I express my feelings she threatens to call a doctor because it's "not normal". It's really making me want to quit art. Any advice for stuff like this?
Draw because you like to draw and not to impress others, especially those who don’t support you. If you want to share you drawings, share them with people who care. As long as one person likes what you draw, that’s all that matters and that person should be you. So just keep drawing. You do you, maybe not showing your mom would be best. I rarely, if ever, show my mom my works because I KNOW she’ll be judgy about the content even if it’s not bad.
And I don’t want to say, “It’s ok that you parent thinks it’s bad.” But know that you’re not the only one and you can do this.
