Last fall, I got to see David Byrne’s American Utopia on Broadway and it was an amazing evening. One that seems a long time ago in another existence now, certainly. I picked up the cast recording just before life closed down last month, but didn’t have the energy to listen to it. Frankly, I haven’t had it in me to listen to much music at all during the pandemic. I finally was in the mental space to put this album on this afternoon and it was an unexpected balm for the soul. What struck me once again, much as it did when I first saw the show, is how emotional and warm Byrne has let his songs become. So many of his songs over the years have been fun but they keep their distance by being clever and intellectual—you can enjoy them but you can’t embrace them, nor do they embrace you either. Here, however, the heart dominates, closing that gap and pumping warmth and blood into even nonsense songs like “I Zimbra.” Perhaps my unconscious remembered that and made me hold off on listening to this until I needed it; it was a very welcome distraction.

So this happened the other night after I went to see American Utopia on Broadway: David Byrne signed my prized Japanese pressing of Talking Heada’ Stop Making Sense, a top-five all-time favorite if there ever was one.
