To any of you, can you tell us a bit more about how you got into your trade?
"First time someone's asked about that."
They had a hint of curiosity in their tone. It fades once they speak again.
"For me? Was wanderin' around the city one day, lookin' for a more interesting job. Ended up in the more seedy side. Abandoned buildings, vandalism, that kinda stuff. Anyway, came across some graffiti. Seems like whoever did it was in a rush – Left their stuff behind. You can probably guess what happened next. And hey, that was a while ago, so don't go tellin' on me, alright?"
They chuckled a bit.
"Was a bit freeing though, ya know? Doing something I enjoyed for once..."
They were silent a moment.
"Ya know what? Lemme test somethin' real quick. Gonna try and transfer ya to Robin. Just to see if it works. And hey, you could get their story, too."
There was a click. A bit different than usual. Then the familiar sound of a phone ringing from the caller's end.
"hello..."
They collect their thoughts for a moment.
"I used to work at a library where I would look at books when I was off work or on break. I found one about plants...it seemed like it hadn't been touched in a long time, so I decided to read it. I realize after I had never seen a plant before in person, so I began to look around to find any. it took me a long time before I actually found one...it was some kind of vine in the outskirts of the city, close by where my shop is now. I studied and tested on it a little to see if it was possible to transport...it didn't work very well...but...it did help me find out where plants came from...I never knew dark candy came from trees until then..."
After a brief moment they gave a thoughtful hum.
"here, let me transfer you to Amethyst..."
There was the same click sound as before, once again followed by a ringing phone...
"Of course, Lightener. I'll, try to spare you from any of the more boring moments."
He chuckles a little, his mood brightening.
You hear the sound of him turning the photo album back to the cover before slowly flipping through the pages.
The album began at the same time as his original career. Several pages contained low-quality Polaroid photos of him working at a high-class jewelry store. Some were out of focus, seemingly taken by someone with little to no experience working with a camera. Despite this, each photo was quite happy. He, as well as a few others presumed to be coworkers, were smiling and having fun in each and every photo. Even those badly blurred had an air of happiness to them.
Several pages later a familiar face appears. The next portion of the album contain photos with Robin sprinkled throughout, their name written in several descriptions as well. The friendship between the two developed quickly it seemed. Not long after the initial photo there were pictures of Amethyst visiting Robin's shop, the two hanging out after work, even "store hunting" together. As well as this there were several miscellaneous photos with descriptions such as "Robin received new plants today" and "We found a perfect location." The amount of blurred photos drastically decreased.
He skips several pages at once.
The next section of the album contained many photos from inside a mine, as well as some discoveries. Various mineral deposits, crystal pockets, and carefully extracted specimens covered the next few pages; a photo of some of the miners, Amethyst, and/or Robin appearing every now and then.
Amethyst lifts the album, getting a better look at some of the photos for himself before beginning to flip to the next page.
Something fell from between the pages. He carefully picks the item up and sets the album down.
"I don't remember this photo..."
"It doesn't seem like it turned out right..."
He held the photo, studying the ruined splotches of melded colors that covered it. And the date. It seemed to have been taken around the same time many of the mining photos. He also seemed to note the lack of a proper description.
Once he had finished his observations, he carefully tucked it between two pages once more and continued to the next section of the album.
The next few pages were somber.
Amethyst rested his arm on the first page, obscuring several photos, seemingly unintentionally.
From the photos that were visible it was clear to see that Amethyst had been to the hospital. Many of the descriptions in this part were written in two different handwritings. One clean and one shaky. The neat handwriting seemed to be written by a 2nd party, addressing Amethyst, while the messy handwriting was all in first person. A few photos stood out in this section. One had Amethyst laying in a hospital bed, hands over his face. It seemed as though he had been crying. Robin sat in a chair beside him, hand on his shoulder. Another was after he had been discharged. He had a concerned look. There was a noticeable change in his appearance.
He closes the book.
*Artist's Note: The XX in the dates are placeholders. In-world they are actual numbers indicating the month and day. I currently prefer not to give solid dates aside from years.
Blood? Someone better check that page again.. if Amythest is alright with us looking of course
"I suppose I can open to that page for you...though, I am unsure of how you were able to see it..."
He sounds hesitant.
"One moment, please..."
You can hear him carefully set the phone down and pick up the photo album. After what felt like ages, you could hear the creak and crackle of an old book opening.
