👁️🗨️ - A lucid dream
Silas flicks lazily through the channels on the television, the screen casting a pale blue light over the darkened room.
His brain seems to be filled with static. He's laid out over a small futon, idly smoking a cigarette, looking for something entertaining to watch. The remote is held in his hand, button clicking every few seconds.
Sports. Boring.
News. Boring.
Weather. Boring.
Cooking. Boring.
Cooking...?
"Marguerite! When's that gumbo gonna be ready for our newest daughter?"
Silas slowly absorbs the information, realizing that the screen is showing him what must be the kitchen in the Baker household. This was footage he'd seen before, wasn't it? Footage intercepted by Nicholas and sent to him concerning his work with the Connections.
Over the kitchen counter, Marguerite is busying around, a parody of a modern housewife, tiny and stringy, bustling around for ingredients, but for the small and noticeable in the picture: most of the ingredients are coming from the large bloodied corpse balanced precariously on the kitchen island.
He doesn't need to see this again. He's seen it before, and once was enough. In thorough disgust, he clicks the button to change the channel again. Maybe back to the news, this time.
"Reports are calling it the biggest Serial Scare since the Seventies."
Silas' brow furrows, given that the announcer's dialogue sounds somewhat familiar, as well. He quickly realizes this is a 2016 report on the region of Dulvey Parish, Louisiana, and the many disappearances that have taken place in the area. As it was stable land not known for sinkholes and no bodies had been recovered, foul play was obviously suspected, hence the talk about serial killers.
Which wasn't too far off from the truth.
But Silas has no use for this information. He changes the channel again, hoping for something he hadn't seen before. Maybe the game show channel?
"I'm callin' the game 'I'd Really Like to Make It Out of This Room Alive and Not Die a Horrible, Painful Death. I know, it's a temp title."
Ah, so he gets to choose when the channel changes in this dream, but not the contents. Got it.
Silas' mouth thins in grim acknowledgement, slowly dragging himself into a sitting position. He's seen this one before, too, and gleaned nothing much from it except that Lucas Baker watched too many Saw Movies and had too much time on his hands for any worthwhile psycho.
He'll give to Clancy Jarvis, he thinks, the dude was able to take some punishment. He thinks a bit on how Sewer Gators used to be one of his favorite amateur haunted house shows on YouTube. Shame how it ended. He thinks for a moment, wondering if maybe he should keep watching until the tape ended, see what the television put on in its place.
He's not much interested in seeing the end of a short film he already knows is coming, though. Least of all not one that ended so predictably.
Sighing, when he sees Clancy about to burn, he decides to end this dream short. He takes the cigarette and puts it out on his arm, a surge of pain causing him to -
🔥
Silas' eyes snap open.
...Awaken.
