Mangos in March, Ami Mehta
Despite moving from place to place throughout my life, and spending the vast majority in the Middle East or the US, it is my Indian roots that define and shape who I am and who I want to be. I am infatuated with India’s chaotic collision of bold shapes and textures, all-encompassing, all competing for attention. My passion and urgency for this connection to my motherland seeps into every aspect of my personality, but it shines brightest through my art. When I have to be away from my second homeland for a long time, I rely on my color-memories of India, from potent and dense vermilion hand-dyed dots, to uplifting canary yellow ikat. Exploring these juxtapositions of vibrant, sometimes jarring colors and patterns fuels a deep sense of belonging in me.
