POW!WOW! ANTELOPE VALLEY

"I’ve always been interested in real stories and people," Iran-born but Virginia-raised Amir Fallah told @VoyageLAMag. "When I first began making art all of my work revolved around my personal experiences." As Fallah began to expand to exploring other people's lives he started to ask questions like "how do you create a portrait that doesn't show someone's physical likeness?" Covering his subjects with textile designs and filling his work with the artifacts of their life histories and stories, he has found a way to look beyond superficial descriptions and tell a deeper story. For Pow!Wow! Antelope Valley in Lancaster, California, Fallah's 2018 mural on Date Ave provides us a glimpse at the rich layered design he commonly uses to both mask and reveal his subjects.  @amirhfallah/  @moahlancaster/  @powwowav/

Amir H. Fallah Residency Dates: January 12 – March 27, 2015 Exhibition: Perfect Strangers

Perfect Strangers re-interprets and gives new weight to everyday objects as active participants in the construction of self-identification. Fallah’s compositions, both fluid and fragmented, embrace the moments when things do not quite align, and gives the work a sense of honesty that reveals the complex factors of identity which cannot be expressed through a simple corporeal rendering. Inviting the community and its objects into the Artist Lab, Fallah articulates a sense of regional identity that is ambiguous, yet informed by the perspective of an international artist who calls the Los Angeles metro area home.

Much like a historian or ethnographer, Fallah works with a diverse mix of local communities and groups to collect material evidence of their private and public lives and transform them into artworks. Portraits are composed using objects and textiles the subjects deem significant, to develop an exploration of the ways that identities are formed out of emotional associations with–and nostalgia for–specific products, objects, and places.
