Jodie Comer reading a love letter from Vita Sackville-West to Virgina Woolf
I find it ironic how people say Australia is "so multicultural with so much diversity in languages and people", and yet... they say that asylum seekers should "go back to where they came from" because they're "taking Australian jobs" - which is untrue, as the refugees permitted into communities instead of detention centres while waiting for their applications to be processed, are not able to work because their visas don't allow them to get work. this is where the misconception of refugees "taking the taxpayer's money" comes from, because the government gives them $220/week through Centrelink. If you think about this amount though (and remember, this is all they are getting), in most places, it wouldn't even pay off the rent, let alone food and electricity etc.
And when people say that they "don't bother to learn English". So, what? Are we going to be a nation with "diverse languages" with just English? I've traveled around the world, ad in not one country that I have been to, have they expected me to learn or speak their national language. I think that these countries (although some may not have the diversity in ethnic groups), are more "multicultural" than we are. I learn a second language, and it's not easy even with a native speaker teaching me. I've asked many people why they don't learn a second language and they simply say "because it's too hard". So you can imagine coming to a country after fleeing war or repression and trying to learn English- one of the most difficult languages to learn - by yourself with no one to teach you because you are unable to communicate with anyone, since no one in the region speaks your national language.
Why are we so damn afraid of different varieties of people coming here? We have so much land and resources. Accepting more refugees would not hinder our economy, but expand it. We could fill in so many jobs that can't be done at present because we simply don't have the population to do so. We could expand our ranges or languages and knowledge of not just other people's cultures, but our own as well.
IT IS NOT ILLEGAL TO SEEK ASYLUM IN AUSTRALIA UNDER THE DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS AND BY AUSTRALIAN LAW!
