He’s just watching. He’d never seen a woman clad in this kind of jewelry before. Definitely an echidna. But not the one that was his enemy. Interesting. He was under the impression that the guardian was the only left of his species. Information like this could be sold, for a lot of money. So he doesn’t just ignore her presence.
Oh, he had fucked up. He had fucked up majorly and this time it wasn’t worth fixing, not in his eyes. The damage was arguably too great and he had other things to worry about; this wasn’t necessarily what he wanted, but…
It was better.
Hopefully Chasey would see that. Or rather, his questionable company would realize that. The grand god himself was not really a concern, but Mephiles wouldn’t be honest if he didn’t expect some sort of scolding from him.
He hadn’t felt like walking through a portal, so he’d manifested one below himself, allowing his form to gently fall to the ground of the palace, a quiet clinking of his talons and dissipating energy announcing his nervous arrival.

This was very strange. By all accounts she had landed in what appeared to weapons factory of some kind, but none of the Badniks here have done anything beyond stare at her as she moved around. Well if they were not going to attack the least she could do was learn as much as she could about the place before causing any trouble.
Her sensors were detecting some kind of energy she’s never seen before that was keeping her from getting a decent scan on anything else. So she was unable to tell just what was powering the Badniks or even the factory itself.
Getting a look at one of the conveyor belts that carried the weapons, they did not match anything within her database, so she held back on helping herself to some of them for now. That left her with only one more point of interest to investigate. Turning towards the highest concentration of the unknown energy, she engaged the thrusters on her back, and boosted off towards it.

Another morning. Flicky’s chirping, emerald shining, children sleeping still soundly. It was quite early, but time barely mattered to him. This day, like any other day, was the exact same thing. Uninteresting. For a while the silence upset him, but Chaos had grown used to the only voice being his own. It was funny; even without Tikal around, the god would still say things aloud in plain every now and then.
Another strange oddity was even though the cold had gone, Chaos was often not without the blanket he’d received from another friend of his. It was a recent habit, and one he knew the answer as to why but wouldn’t say it. Corny, yes; but to the god it was some sort of reminder he wasn’t completely forgotten.
On the flip side however, though guests were more plentiful than expected for a floating island the deity never humored them much if at all. So when he detected a warp and a presence near his shrine, he spoke outright, “Exactly what miserable creature would intrude in my home so early??” A long spear-headed tail unfolded from under the blanket which slowly started to slide off. Chaos didn’t want to look so plush and friendly towards any visitors.
What was surprising then was how before he could move it, the cloth was yanked off. Immediately a bouncy voice followed, “Aww, you don’t really mean ‘miserable’ do ya?? ‘Figured you and I were quite the pals!” It was shocking this new person was so quick to approach, until looking up Chaz had registered the twin face of his alternate. For a short while he stared straight at him, until swifter than a blink Chaos swiped his arm up and warped the blanket down into the hollowed shrine the two stood on, deciding not to acknowledge anything that just happened.
Uncurling from his resting position, Chaos inquired, “And to what pleasure do I owe a visit..?” He blinked unevenly, showing signs of drowsiness alien to one of his race. The other didn’t question it much, they both picked up odd traits from mobians.
“Well, our good friend Mephiles really~, but I was really just gonna hop in and say hello to my dear littl’ self!” It chimed, enthusiastic but quiet enough not to wake what children he knew were present. “But since someone seems to be enjoying their last present so much; ol’ Saint Chasey came early this year with another one~! What’d’ya say dear???” His friend was just as flamboyant and coy as always. Small, but yet somewhat comforting.
“I say you’ve lost me, but I am in no need of charity. I get along fine as is.”
“Sooooooooooo~” Chimmed the other aquatic, shifting his hands about as if he were a magician about to do a trick. He turned sideways and held his hands one above the other with a big void of empty space in between. “I guess you won’t want this little treat then~?” and after clapping his cupped hands together an emerald appeared between them.
Chaz’ had been offered emeralds before, but this one made him gawk on grounds of it being one that belonged to him. “...How-...?” His dizzy eyes now becoming a glare, “So the speck will give you my emeralds, but not myself? I think not you need to hear this, but it has proven very, very hard to not detest this world when all it’s inhabitants seem engrossed in a keep away game with fractions of your soul.”
“Maybe th’ doll won’t give ya them cuz you call him a ‘speck’?” Chasey chimed in with a shrug, continuing to keep the emerald floating between his fingers.
“Or maybe he’s the same power-hungry selfish purposeless elemental nearly all of us are.” Chaos replied with narrowed eyes. “And again, I think it unnecessary to remind you how coveted our energy is to those who seek strength beyond strength.”
The visitors face turned sour, what seemed like a pout mixed with concern. “Do you have that kind of faith in all your friends Chazzy my boy?”
Chaos didn’t answer this time. A ripple ran through his body that managed to imitate a sigh. The one only presumed the other could know how much trust was an issue for him. “Tell me then, how did you acquire my creation?”
Chasey blinked for a bit, face showing a blank neutral expression for a rare change. “Why he handed it me!”
“HA!!”
“I ain’t pullin’ your leg darlin’. He did.”
“How many limbs did you break?”
“Not-a-one!”
“repeat?”
“Zip”
“Is Zip a unit beyond millions?”
“Lookit, Chazzy dear, Mephy is a tease but he’s just as fond of you as I am! Er.. I might be a bit generous there but you can call him your friend-”
“There is no elemental farther than me who acts for the benefit myself Chasey.”
A glare from one to another, as if Chasey was feeling a little undercut and unappreciated by that last comment. Chaos quickly added, “Did I not say myself? Are you not included in that category?”
“Light Gai-?”
“Pleeeeease do not speak of such... tiny matters in my domain.”
Chasey merely rolled his eyes. Chaz bad mood was a constant but it seemed he was getting worse and worse with the time. It was beginning to drum up some memories best left lost. “With an attitude like that, I’m not sure I should give you this little stone-”
“Chasey,” sounded an exhausted voice from the form sitting on the edge of the giant emerald, “Tell me as yourself, what harm can you foresee in giving me my emerald as I am..?”
“....” Now it was his turn to sigh, “Ok I wasn’t really gonna keep it from you; I ain’t that cruel.” The deity’s face brightened up and a finger shot into his alternate’s face, “But ya better work on that attitude or I might have ta’ come over and school you on it m’self!”
Chaos just kind of giggled, emitting a much more friendlier sound than before. He looked up, showing a lot more cheer this time, “Thank you very kindly, Chasey. I appreciate your dedication. I doubt I’ll ever be like you in the end, we are after all from different worlds...”
“Now that’s more like it! Chin up deary! Ehehe~” He cheered patting the host’s head. If Chasey were anyone else he’d get a right hook for doing so. There was a long pause, Chasey held out the emerald and Chaz stood upon taking it into his own. It was a sort of nice silence, albeit somewhat awkward. Finally Chasey broke it to address the real issue that he felt troubled his friend the most, “She’ll show up again! She always does, just you wait!”
He gave a quiet yet deep grumble, not wanting to reply with anything that might show more appreciation. That was fine, Chasey didn’t mind too much. Had to preserve that oh so precious hard exterior somehow. Figuring all was well, the finely suited liquid creature turned to leave when;
“This is actually quite nice..”
“Huh- yes dear! It was in excellent condition surprising me too!”
“... It’s like it never left me for a moment...”
“Pretty impressive huh~?”
“It’s... pure... I can sense barely a trace of his, pardon my saying, frankly wretched energy on it. Hell I can’t sense any..!”
“Y-... yeah..?” Chasey was starting to get a little wet under the collar. “That’s a peculiar thing to focus on don’t ‘cha think?”
“When I consider it’s time away, not even a slight bit. This is nearly as perfect as when I first created them.”
“Yeah I’ve been meanin’ ta ask ya’ why you made yours-”
“-Foolish mistake, never looked back. My more pressing question to you is how you fancy he kept this thing in such a state??”
“I dunno? Mephy seems the type to take good care of his stuff.”
“That would make sense if these were his..!” Chaz’ voice was beginning to grow concerned, distraught almost. “They’re mine however..! And how he could possibly have managed to keep his claws from tainting my pure energy isn’t logical Chasey- how do you fig-”
Chasey cut him off with a coy giggle. He found his way to end this before Chazzy boy started asking too many questions that didn’t need answers, especially not in his state where trusting people was hard by default, “Seems to me good ol’ meph must be a pretty good friend then huh?” He said with a shrug.
“Reeeeeeeeeaally now??” His tone reaching a new peak of skepticism. “And I figure he just gave you the one out of guilt for his poor dear friend? Perhaps he felt pity I don’t have my own mortal toy lying around to fiddle with hmm?”
“Chazzy;” Chasey turned back with a huff and crossed arms, “Ya reeeeally startin’ to bother me with th’ slander talk.”
Chaz’ eyes contorted in mass confusion, an arm giving an exaggerated shrug to complete the expression. Chasey’s eyes only narrowed in response as he continued, “He gave ya the damn emerald now just be grateful.”
Chaos sighed again but eased back into a neutral position, “I would think having something that belonged to me returned would not be cause for gratitude...” He said solemnly staring at his gem with a content yet distant look. Before Chasey could retort he added, “But I have been wrong about many things, many times... At the very least, this gift gives me some peace of mind.. knowing.... that my emeralds.... are safe... That they are fine... Perhaps I ought to think more highly of the lad....”
Chasey’s arms unfolded and placed their hands on his hips. Gleeful more than before he called out, “Ya’ darn right! Ya’ need to work on bein’ a happier man darlin! Then everything will go your way! Now I gotta skip but don’t you go thinkin’ about your missing gems now cuz they’re fine as they ever could be!” With a skip and a hop the body of the being distorted through time and space to his own zone with a final shout of, “CYA SOON PUMPKIN!!”
and then there was silence... back to the quiet of the morning, the flicky chirps, rustling trees, Chao that had still managed too sleep through the whole thing, and Chaos left to eye his most recent present. He stared deep into the core of the emerald, letting his own energy sync with that of his gem. The two were identical... almost... there was something off about how new this emerald was... something his alternate tried to hide. And bless his heart he tried his best and very nearly succeeded, but these were Chaz’ emeralds. He knew how they worked, how they felt. He knew there was no possible way these emeralds could return so renewed... And he saw straight through what his dear friend was trying to do.
And in the silence of the morning, the god said to himself very abruptly, very plainly, “...”
{☄} If it had been one thing the hedgehog had missed during his latest absence, it had been the random acts of socializing that came with running into people. Sometime literally or, like now, close enough that his abrupt stop didn’t actually cause him to hit the person…but a giant cloud of dirt and dust that came with him hitting the brakes.
