From what he knows, the crash left him an orphan, and he became a child of the state. (this is not true-he had a surviving father and a handful of kin that could have cared for him. though he lived through the crash, he was announced dead, paving the way for the government to keep him) A few years later, his arms were upgraded, and he began 'weapon training'. 

Along with several other 'children', Amphos was trained not only to fight, but to destroy. With the right triggers--manual or not--he goes into weapon mode. His arms get bigger and turn black--yellow accents turn red. He can shoot rapid-fire bullets from guns hidden in his palms, small flame throwers in his fingers, and bayonet-like knifes in his wrists that can be used for close-up combat (subject to change) He's 'durable', strong, and stealthy. Machine tends to overcome mind in weapon mode, and he tends to destroy more than he's supposed to--which is, in truth, what his 'guardians' intended to happen.

There are other children that he is friends with, some his age, some younger. His best friend is someone who was taken from an orphanage and modified without real reason--no previous injuries called for any sort of amputation or upgrade or anything, really, and because of this, the friend is more rebellious and hateful than Amphos. The friend seeks revenge--Amph simply wants freedom.
