ALBUM OF THE MONTH:

Roc Marciano – RR2: Bitter Dose / Valee – GOOD Job You Found Me (tie)

New Roc Marci is an old man’s music, sure, but what are you supposed to listen to when these young’uns are so bad? I heard on the Internet the mastering was shitty on this. It sounded fine to me. What do I know? Marc is on the old shit here, pure joy to listen to him rhyming fresh rhymes when the nothing-ass rappers rhyme the same 30 words over and over again.

I also read on the Internet complaints that the Valee EP is packaged as a press release for a white media. Accidentally, these complaints were from white media. And I wonder why Valee did blow just now when he was always good? Thanks gods for his Adidas tracksuits.

You probably can’t find two rappers that sound so different, yet they are similar in that they both don’t fill their music with lame ass guest verses. As Z-Ro said, I'ma let'em rap on my song Then my song won't even be my song.

Rich Homie Quan – Rich As In Spirit – Garbage

Chief Keef – The Leek (Vol 5) – You gotta go through a lot of filler to find something worthwhile

Andre Nickatina – Pisces – Skits are better than songs on this one.

Waka Flocka Flame Zaytoven and Big Bank – The Brick House Boyz – More garbage if anybody had doubts

Trae Tha Truth – Hometown Hero – Trae fell off hard.

BandGang Lonnie Bands – The Get Back – Generic as fuck, yet what always marked Lonnie is that even out of generic shit he can make something good. Memorable hooks and some good track here.

Lil Yase – Winners Circle – Not that menace sounding as his previous releases and too many garbage guest verses. A few good cuts at the end of the album.

Sean Price and Illa Ghee – Metal Detectors – It’s hard to figure how much new stuff here, and it looks like a chance for Illa Ghee to sell his personal brand. Still, good stuff.

MED x Guilty Simpson – Loyalty – I like Guilty but this is unmemorable.

Ampichino – Betrayal – Am is one of not many who hasn’t lost touch with reality. A few stand outs on here, though a lot of garbage guests, too.

Ampichino \ Rich the Factor — Midwest Tygoons (Double F)

Midwest Tygoons is a welcome collaboration between two veterans. Their sound is stuck in the mid-2010s, but it perfectly revives the spirit of the Jacka’s music.

The two “tygoons” share a region, but also a mentor. Both worked with the late Jacka, Ampichino more closely but the Jack gave space on his albums to Rich the Fac as well. It’s been almost 15 years since the last collaboration between Am and the Jack (not counting the posthumous CD). The Devil Rejectz series remains one of Ampichino’s crowning achievements, establishing him as an artist of great talent, not just the Jacka’s sidekick. Rich the Factor has been paving his own path in Kansas since 1997. He’s put out an insane amount of material, more than 50 albums and mixtapes combined.

We don’t know why they took so long to make this collaboration. Midwest Tygoons is a blast from the past, totally nostalgic in its sound and style for the early 2000s drug rap. It can be easily mistaken for a Bay Area tape, with its minimalistic and creepy production. Both artists have nothing to prove now. Maybe this is what makes this tape so smooth. Past their prime, they’ve found a niche and feel quite relaxed in their drug kingpins position.  They also bring younger blood, like Berner, Young Bossi and King Locust, artists the Jack worked with.

Ampichino captures the spirit of the album on the chorus for “Heartbeat”: “We big whales with sharp teeth \ Trying to chase mail on these dark streets \ Under the street lights we spark heat \ Put your ear to the turf and hear my heartbeat.”  Rich the Factor’s unusual mumbly flow and Am’s overly emotional delivery lay smoothly on slow beats.

Even though Midwest Tygoons was released on Ampichino’s label, the tape has all the flaws of Rich the Factor’s music. Roughly half of the songs here last longer than they should, and a few tracks wiggle and waggle with no clear focus.

If Midwest Tygoons was released 15 years ago it would have been a clear hit. Today, it is a dose of nostalgia for those who miss Bay Area \ Midwest collaborations in the vein of The Devil Rejectz. And there is nothing wrong with nostalgia if the dosage is right.

Lee Majors - She’s Bad (feat. Dru Down & Bishop Don Datta, prod. KFW Productions)

Natuurlijk is de Bay een plek waar grommende players al enige decennia de dienst uitmaken. Maar Lee Majors waardeer ik vooral als hij ook met anderen op een track te vinden is. De who’s who op dit project is dan ook niet verkeerd als we bijvoorbeeld kijken naar een ‘D Boy Dreams’ met Ampichino (als altijd een meer dan verdienstelijke verse), maar een andere uitschieter is met de wel bekende Dru Down. Enige tijd geleden verscheen Cash Me Out (2006) eindelijk online, maar helaas zijn de eigen recente albums wat mager. Overigens ook een compliment voor KFW Productions die sommige van zijn beats online adverteert als ‘Shoddy Boi type beats’. Dat is het type beats dat we vaker willen zien.
