a more in depth ficlet on how mikey lost his arms (plus comfort)
Donnie couldn't tell what was going on when Mikey put his hands in front of him and pushed. He didn't know how exactly to grieve, but he was almost sure that wasn't it.
And that's when Mikey started glowing.
He was at his brother's shoulder in an instant, the searing burn of mystic energy numb against his skin as Mikey pried open the portal. And there was Leo's face, beaten and bruised. Donnie couldn't have been more relieved to see him alive.
He wasn't relieved enough to notice the Kraang coming up from behind. Straight for Leo.
It felt like going into overdrive. Using the last bit of energy he had left to send Kraang pummelling backwards. Not strong enough to knock him far, but stalled long enough for Raph to reach in and pull Leo out. Stalled long enough for Mikey to wink, and close the portal in flamboyant Mikey fashion.
With Leo safe in his arms, Donnie felt complete. And beyond furious. No, not furious.
Scared. Donnie was terrified.
"You dumb-dumb! You idiot don't you ever do that ever again!" He screeched frantically, flipping his goggles onto his face to check his twin over. Serious injuries, his legs were almost shattered. Salvageable, about a 60% chance of his legs making it out alright. His shell, dear God, his shell. Donnie felt like he was about to pass out.
Raph was sobbing hysterically. "Leo, I was so.. so scared.. Why w- would you do that?! I'm ne- never letting you go ag- again!" Leo chuckled, fighting to stay awake. The warmth in his face drained a little as he lifted his head to look around.
"..Don?" Leo asked, nudging his brother, "Where's.. Where's Mikey?" Donnie opened his mouth to answer, but clamped it shut as he realized he actually didn't know. The three turtles glanced around, eyes landing on their little brother.
Their little brother, who's arms were bleeding out.
Mikey was wheezing, eyes stinging with tears as his chest spasmed with each breath.
Donnie felt sick all over again, tripping over his feet as he scrambled over to Mikey. "Mikey?! Mikey, can you hear me?!" He begged, lifting his little brother gently to stare him in the eyes. The box turtle's eyes were glossy and frantic. "Don.. Donnie, I can't.. I can't feel my arms.."
Raph called to Donnie, snapping him out of it. "Donnie! Leo's passing out! Grab Mikey and let's go to April and Dad!"
Donnie was careful, lifting his brother into his arms. Mikey's blood splattered on to his plastron, and Donnie fought down the urge to vomit.
"Donnie.." Mikey murmured weakly, "Donnie, I'm scared. I'm so tired, Donnie.. it hurts.." Donnie tried to put on a brave face. "We're going home, Mikey. Just stay awake, please. Please stay awake."
Mikey whined again. Donnie barrelled towards the tank with speed he didn't know he had.
Get Mikey home. Get Mikey home.
-----
Donnie chugged down his third coffee. Mikey was cleaned up, and asleep.
He had called Draxum, who insisted on cleaning up Donnie as well.
"You cannot take care of Michelangelo if you are actively bleeding, Donatello. I thought you knew better." Draxum had chided with no real malice, gently wrapping Donnie's shell and face with bandages. Donnie grunted.
"Is Mikey going to be okay?" Donnie asked, slightly hopeful. He knew what the answer was going to be.
Draxum sighed, pausing to glance at the box turtle. "I can't save his arms. The nerves in both of his forearms are completely fried. I would not be surprised if he did not wake up any time soon."
A blanket of horror fell on Donnie. "We're going to amputate them?"
Draxum nodded, his face contorted with shame and sorrow. "If you want to keep the mystic burns from spreading, yes."
"I can't do it. I can't be there for that." Donnie whispered, eyes wide. Draxum put a furry hand on Donnie's head and rubbed it gently. "Go to your father. I'm going to check on Leonardo before I do anything."
Donnie glanced back at his computer, scanning the data. His calculations said that Mikey's arms would be okay with enough rigorous therapy. His eyes caught onto a little number. A little number Donnie hadmissed. It screwed over all the calculations and gave Donnie hope.
Draxum walked out of the medbay room, and into the room next door, where Raph was watching Leo. Donnie stood on shaky legs and collapsed next to Mikey's bedside, watching the rise and fall of Mikey's chest. And his last glimpse at Mikey's arms. Those arms that had made such beautiful things. Those arms that cooked, that painted, that loved.
Donnie had never cried so much. He cried for Leo, and Mikey, and all the things they lost.
"I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry."
-----
Raph knocked on the lab door. Once, twice. No response. He sighed, pushing the button and watching the door slide open with a hiss. Donnie stared idly at his computer, Mikey and Leo still in their respective cots, and still not awake.
Sometimes, if Raph closed his eyes, he can imagine the life that this lab used to have. Donnie simultaneously hard at work while exchanging petty banter with Leo. Mikey humming along to his music while he worked on some new painting.
When Raph opened his eyes, the sight was gone. All he was greeted with was the empty whirring of the fans in Donnie's monitor, and the slightly out of sync beeping of two heart monitors. Raph looked down at the plate of food in his hands, and back at Donnie, who hadn't even acknowledged him yet.
Disassociating. Raph's mind supplied helpfully. He made his way over wires over to where Donnie was, trying to focus on the heavy thumping of his feet. Not loud enough to irritate Donnie, but just enough to snap him out of it.
"Raph? Do you need anything?" Donnie asked, their voice flat and toneless. The snapper gave him a watery look. "I need ya to eat, Don."
Donnie was immediately disinterested. "I can't right now. I'm monitoring their vitals. I need to keep watch."
"Donnie." Raph sighed. Guess it was time to pull out the big guns. Raph let out a low rumble in his throat, wrapping Donnie in the weighted blanket he had just in case. Donnie responded with a hiss-like chirp, but made no move to escape. Raph kept chirring, pulling Donnie out of his chair, and sitting on the floor with him.
"They're gonna be okay Don. Focus on yourself for a little." Raph murmured, squeezing Donnie tight. Just the way Donnie liked it.
The softshell whined. "Raphie.. Raph.. I'm so scared. I don't.. I don't want to lose them." Raph rubbed Donnie's head, letting out another low rumble. "I'll watch them for now. Go to sleep, Don."
"But I.. I have to.." Donnie's words slurred, their eyes slipping shut. Raph smiled.
After all this time, Raph's still got it.
