“I thought it was worth not tainting my lightning… but then, my lightning could never be tainted as it’s pure—burns away impure things to ashes.” Ransom advanced on Yarrow, who lifted his head, struggling with pain, defiance written over his fear.
Ransom grasped his chin. “It is…fortuitous we found you here. A strange turn of events that crossed our paths again. Almost… one could say…fateful.” He let sparks glitter into Yarrow’s skin. He flinched but his eyes flashed, bright bravado carving strength across his face. “After you betrayed us, you escaped our grasp. Somehow insinuated yourself into the higher echelons. Maneuvered out of our reach. Put yourself in a position you had no right to—one that only real Nobility deserve.”
“You didn’t want it,” said Yarrow. “You wouldn’t serve under Dusk no matter what he paid you. He too is too eclectic for you.”
“He does not deserve his position either. But we’re not here to discuss him.”
“I didn’t betray you.”
Ransom took a step back. He moved slowly, elegantly, but his fists were clenched. “You betrayed us by what you are. You lied about your very being—manipulated our trust. Just when we were vulnerable.”
“I never hurt you. I tried to help you.”
“As if I’d want help from a soj!”
Yarrow flinched at the slur. He bit his lip, anger dashing across his face.
