The trailer is out for the new Jeff Buckley documentary "It's Never Over" by Amy Berg and it looks amazing!!! 🥰 Made me emotional too and has so much new footage of him already in this trailer and I know from the reviews from critics and fans that there's more, and all the people they interview for this. It's gotten so much praise and I can't wait to hopefully see this in theaters next month. It comes out August 8th in the US and deals are being worked on for other countries.

Movie Review: It's Never Over, Jeff Buckley

The 1994 album Grace by singer/songwriter Jeff Buckley (1966-1997) is truly a timeless masterpiece of a tremendous talent. It stands as the only studio album release before his death in 1997 at age 30. Over the years, it's an album that has had serious legs and people still talk about and praise. His voice was angelic and his music went beyond the 90s Alternative Nation he was marketed under. He was the son of folk singer Tim Buckley (1947-1975), who I mainly knew of because my father was a fan. I still remember as a kid looking at the album cover in my Dad's collection and being mesmerized by the Pepsi cap in his eye! But I digress. Jeff was determined to not be a nepo-baby and ride his Dad's coattails, he toughed it out in small NYC venues in the early 90s. I heard a few of his songs, but picked up Grace a few years after his passing and it's an album you can just listen to start to finish, no skipping, an album I come back to quite frequently too. There hasn't been much in the way of a full-on documentary treatment of Jeff Buckley. The 2022 doc Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, a Journey, a Song was about the song "Hallelujah" and it covered his version of the Leonard Cohen song, but I'm happy to say Jeff Buckley is finally getting the music documentary treatment he deserves in Amy Berg's doc It's Never Over, Jeff Buckley opening this week following a festival run.

Berg is an extremely talented documentarian of the now. She was nominated for an Oscar for Deliver Us from Evil and she's done great docs since including West of Memphis and Janis: Little Girl Blue. After years of talks with Buckley's mother Mary Guibert about making a narrative film of Jeff Buckley, Berg got permission to make a documentary and Brad Pitt (who was looking to play him in a scripted film) joined the doc as executive producer. I say this to preface that this is a deeply personal doc about a mysterious subject. Interviewees include Guibert, actress / musician Rebecca Moore (his ex-girlfriend), musician Joan Wasser (his ex-fiancee), and fellow musician friends like Aimee Mann and Ben Harper. The doc goes deep into the archival footage to show Jeff being raised by his single mother, barely knowing his father, taking to music, being a larger-than-life frontman who was known to immerse himself in the moment, i.e. climbing the scaffold at a music fest during Robert Plant and Jimmy Page's set. Sadly, we also get into his drowning at age 30 before the completion of his second album.

As someone who went into this doc knowing little about Jeff Buckley beyond his music and death, I was highly impressed with Berg's doc! This had to have some of the most eyebrow-raising archival footage in recent memory of docs! I mean - WOW! Working in collaboration with Guibert, this had numerous voicemails, drawings, letters and more from the subject. Some parts made me surprised I was seeing it at all, let alone seeing it in a documentary film. At times you didn't even notice that Jeff Buckley isn't alive and didn't take part in the doc in modern-day footage. It is also a highly-emotional doc. One part towards the end will not have a dry eye in the house. Saddest of all is that he died so young and only released one studio album (though a number of compilations, live albums and rarities have been released) and we'll never know the magic he could've made beyond the first album.

Just finished watching the Phoenix Rising documentary about the abuse Evan Rachel Wood suffered - it's more gruesome than I could ever begin to imagine. I want to scream and do something, but all I can think of right now is just to post the link to the Instagram post where she name him. It's a tiny thing, but if you have a second, just go like it.
