A Year At The Wheel Pt. 1 (Shane Bugbee) EP. 33 - 01/02/13/
This was the first show of 2013 and I was glad to start the year off by doing something a different with the show. This episode was different for two reasons. It was the first time I had a guest return and it was an episode with two parts.
Shane Bugbee was the very first guest I had on the show. I have known Shane since we were kids. Honestly, it's been so long that I can't even remember how old we were when we first met. Shane and I were very much the outcasts in our school. We were the guys everyone beat up on, and I mean BEAT up on. As Shane humorously put it on his first visit, We were school shooters before school shooters were cool"
The first time I had Shane on the show we discussed his life and work as an underground publisher. He talked a little bit about being run out of a small town in Minnesota and the year long road trip he and his wife took. They ended up turning this adventure into a five hundred page book and documentary.
They left for this trip with a little over a hundred dollars in their pockets, a dog and turtle. They set out to rely on the kindness of strangers and odd jobs to get by all while documenting it via blogs and videos. The result is a Stud's Terkel-esque document of American's state of mind on politics, art, religion and revolution.
In part 1 of this episode I get Shane's take on the trip. He shares his experiences with losing everything, dining at the Haliburton cook off and learning that all the love he's been looking for can be find between he and his wife.
Shane is truly a fascinating individual and it's a great conversation.
