“Green Gift”
Last week I was asked by my friend OC Notes to submit a poster for an upcoming show of his. I don't really think that mine made the cut, but it was still really fun to make. I just decided to be really experimental. Here is the final version and the hand drawn - scanned letters that got it there.

I did some work for a non-profit organization creating illustrations for their Civics Curriculum teaching Jr High and High School kids how to get involved in law making. Here are some of my illustrations from that publication.

Bus Rides
It's odd, because the thing I'm goin' miss the most about my contract job is the 2 hours of commuting each way. Yes, the very thing, that makes me want to leave. But, I've actually enjoyed it, (besides the actual time that it takes out of my day) pretty much every day. I started out by documenting it. I would, write about the people I saw, and I must tell you, there are some characters. On one occasion, I wrote down all the crazy tid-bits of conversation that I heard around me. I'm not sure what I was thinking. I believe that I had it in my head that I would somehow document my rides everyday (say in a blog). Or a movie, you know, preparing for that screenplay I will write one day.
Anyways, I made some great friends on there. People, who under any other circumstance, I wouldn't normally meet. But people I was happy to see every day. I don't know if I should tell them that my contract is up, or just let things be. I guess I'm romantic like that. As if that secret part of my life is a scene in a play. Ha. I like that no one really knows about it but me. Secrets can be fun, but that was a whole other section in my bus journal. Bus friends, I will miss you and your company and your bus wisdom.
I also took this large amount of time to catch up on some reading. Mainly books on "improving your life." (As I write this, I am using a silly sarcastic gruff voice inside my head and making a childish pouty face.) Reading and reflecting. And learning. I even tried to inconspicuously meditate on my bus ride. At one point driver actually asked if I was okay over the loudspeaker. Although, I was probably just lost in thought, which of course, is the opposite desired outcome of meditation.
My trips made me happy and taught me a lot. Not just about money management, or Thomas Paine , or "mindfulness" or the next show that is coming to town, it taught me a lot about people and my prejudices and theirs, about how people relate to each other, how a stranger can feel closer to you than a friend, how many people are fucked up and some you know, just sleepy.
I guess where, I could have gotten bogged down and completely annoyed with losing four hours of my day, instead, I feel like I gained more experience than that time would have otherwise given me.
But don't get me wrong. I would appreciate a shorter commute next time.
