An Ancient Observer includes ten new compositions. Some are through-composed and completely written out, while others are composed with ample space for Hamasyan to improvise. He cites a wide range of influences—from Baroque dance to hip-hop grooves adapted to piano—and the sounds of his native country of Armenia are present, as always.

Tigran Hamasyan begins a US tour in Portland, OR, tonight, followed by shows in Seattle, Los Angeles, Denver, Fresno, San Francisco, and NYC. He returns to Europe to tour in November. Get tickets here.

Tigran Hamasyan has shared the music video for "Leninagone," from his album An Ancient Observer. It is dedicated to the children who survived the devastating Armenian earthquake that hit his home town of Gyumri (Soviet name: Leninakan) on December 7, 1988, twenty-nine years ago. "I come from the generation of children whose lives were directly affected by this tragic event," he says. "The video portrays the struggle and the hope of all the generations that lived through this apocalyptic time."
