Years ago, in my piano bar days, I had a friend who was a line producer on Flay's first Food Network show. He reported that Flay was actually not a very good cook, and was terrible to his sous chefs, constantly screaming and berating them. He's okay as an executive chef - he apparently has a decent palate in his chosen cuisines - but not a particularly talented COOK.

That squares with what I’ve heard of him, yes. Which sort of makes sense, generally the kind of chef who can build a menu and self-market will have the form of success he’s had. But also that’s not someone who works physically well under pressure, always.

I don’t know I’ve ever had them go grainy! But I’ve never frozen roast potatoes of the normal kind. The only potatoes I freeze are fried, mashed, or these parboiled roast potatoes, and they do fine. Or maybe I just never noticed?

LOL! It’s the Goodwill in the Fulton Market area, a few blocks east of the Randolph Street Market -- I want to say it’s on Racine. That place is a madhouse on weekends.

I'm sorry you're having a rough time. I hope it gets better soon. Also, I totally get the thing about books being sent and not read. Last year was the fisrt time since I could read that my mother read a book I suggested(I had tried a lot of times), and she gives me religious books that I will not read regularly

You have my sympathy. My mother is much the same. Our worldviews are very different. Most of the time I would just prefer to live and let live, since I really hate confrontation, and I doubt we are ever going to change each other’s minds, but my mom just keeps pushing. Seems like we can’t have a single conversation that isn’t about politics or religion anymore.

Oh man I don’t remember that one either! Unless you mean the one where Teddy ends up with James Potter? (it opens with toddler Teddy being shown James as a baby and being VERY UNIMPRESSED.) That one is technically complete but the very initial posting of it had no link to the second and third chapters so some people do think it’s incomplete. Whole thing is here if you want it.

I read Stealing Harry the way other people eat comfort food.

I hear that a remarkable amount, actually, that Stealing Harry is comfort reading, which I love to hear. I’ve put some thought into it and I think it’s because Stealing Harry basically opens with a happy ending. Like, the entire premise of the story is “this starts out better” because it comes from the idea that an adult sees something wrong and fixes it. 

There is conflict in the story and pain and unhappiness, but the characters face all of that from a position within a much stronger community -- Harry has adults who support him in canon, but in Stealing Harry they are actively present and constantly fighting for him in a way that’s absent in canon. This isn’t necessarily a criticism of canon -- Harry is the protagonist in the books and needs to have a certain level of unsafety for the narrative to work. Whereas in Stealing Harry it’s arguably Remus and Sirius who are the protagonists, and casting adults with social and economic power as the protagonists makes for a book where the former protagonist can be a child in a way Harry can’t in the canon.

Sorry, Sam.I named you on Quora as one of my favourite fan fic authors and there are LOTS of very very very enthusiastic HP fans (I got attacked for stating that I did not think Snape's obsession with Lily was either romantic or laudable) - they might be looking you up.

Oh, no worries! Every so often my name pops up in a HP discussion and I was a very prominent fan/writer in the earlier days of the fandom, so a wave hits every once in a while. I’m used to it, though still surprised that Stealing Harry is my AO3 fic with the most hits.

You forgot the creepy bonus factor of Harry and Ginny being the greatest model for Kosofsky-Sedgwick's theory of triangulation in the history of fiction (which is saying something), but yeah.

I finally got off my lazy, and went looking for a title on it. Sorry about that before, but I couldn't recall seing it other than on LJ, many years ago, and indeed, if it's on ao3, it's tucked somewhere I can't find. Legion of Ghosts was the title of the one I was thinking of, although I did and do enjoy a lot of your writing, including the Avengers stuff.

You know I looked it up and it’s on Dreamwidth, but I don’t think it did make it to AO3. I’ve bookmarked to archive it. What’s weird is that I remember it being mine but I don’t remember writing it at all. It read like a new fic. SUPER weird.

As someone with wide feet, thank you for the advice to go up half a size. I frequently go up half-to a whole size, because width, but I appreciate that this is a style where this is useful.

I try to be as helpful as possible. It helps that I’ve worn this style of shoe personally for an entire convention. ;)
