LOL I KNOW RIGHT???! I’ve thought the same thing! Rey, who has been living alone in the ass end of nowhere for basically forever, CLEARLY knows how the Vader story ended because not only has Rey heard of Luke even before she meets Han, SHE AND LUKE LITERALLY DISCUSS THE EVENTS OF RETURN OF THE JEDI: 

LUKE: It was a Jedi Master who was responsible for the training and creation of Darth Vader. REY: And a Jedi who saved him. Yes, the most hated man in the galaxy. But you saw that there was conflict inside him. You believed that he wasn't gone. That he could be turned.

Like...HOW DID SHE KNOW THIS AND KYLO DIDN’T? Did Luke and Leia hire a PR firm to help spread the Redemption story only after the big Vader Reveal was made public? Or are we supposed to presume that Kylo did know this story, but he doesn’t believe it? When did he hear the Redemption part of The Darth Vader Story, since in Bloodline all we know is that he (maybe) found out that his grandfather was Vader because it was in the news? (Unless I am way incorrectly remembering something, the book doesn’t actually include any content about what Ben found out, or what his reaction was, and I think theoretically it leaves open the possibility that he’d already Gone Evil by the time this book happened. It’s set like 6 years before TFA and I don’t remember when we’re supposed to think Kylo broke bad.) I keep wanting to type “is Kylo really just that stupid that everyone else in the entire galaxy, including orphaned pauper children living alone in a desert, knew this story ABOUT HIS OWN DAMN FAMILY, but he didn’t?” and then I’m like “well..." 😄

Toasty, what program(s) do you use for your data analysis? I'm trying to learn SAS and Python right now, but stats are not my thing

Heya!  :)  I do most of my analyses in Google Sheets -- making graphs and doing lightweight analyses is easy enough there, unless you have such a huge dataset that it kills Sheets.  For significance tests I sometimes supplement with socscistatistics.com/tests/.

I’ve used various tools in the past for bigger/more complicated analyses -- Matlab (or Octave, the open source version), R, and Python (though mostly I’ve used Python to scrape data, but I’d like to get better at using it to do analysis and visualization).  All of those tools are much more powerful, but also trickier to learn.  I’ve never used SAS, so I don’t know how it compares.

I agree.  I love the Maryness, it’s basically exactly what I fantasized about for season 4, and I’m glad I got a bit of it before everything went to shit (I knew it wouldn’t last long, it would make for a boring plot, really).  I am sad to see the return of John being a dickhead, but it’s understandable, I think.  People react to grief differently, and I think John’s a bit entitled, although probably not to the extent he’s carrying it.  (I mean, hearing the details would only make him angrier, Mary only got shot because Sherlock kept deliberately provoking Norbury for no reason other than to show off, and not only were there ample signs that it was a bad idea, Mary was verbally warning him that he was pushing her too far.)

Mary was pushing them together in her last moments, I think her sacrifice was as much for John as it was for Sherlock, to the extent she had time to think about it.  A lot’s been read into the fact that her first instinct in CAM’s office was to shoot Sherlock, but if you think that’s a clue to her character, then doesn’t the fact that her first instinct was to protect Sherlock from Norbury’s shot constitute proof of her redemption from selfish motives?  It’s impossible not to see the Mary-hating as blatant projection when she’s only ever tried to push Sherlock and John closer together: repeatedly and openly. 

Man, I hope the stuff with that woman means something other than what the show is suggesting though.  I really don’t want to hate John, and I find infidelity to be wildly infuriating and indefensible.

There’s an entire TEDtalk on power posing and how “faking it till you make it” can literally rewire your brain to make more positive connections. You can become more confident just by imitating the things confident people do, for example. I highly recommend everyone watch it, I cannot remember the name but I think if you look up power posing it should come up.

I have to say I was always a bit suspicious of the power posing thing because it involves some wacky gender essentialism (at least one study based their results on testosterone/estrogen levels, with raised testosterone indicating increased confidence) and lately there’s been some evidence that the theory suffers from p-hacking/poor sample size issues. So on the one hand it may not be valid biologically -- but on the other hand, if it works, even just psychologically, it can be of use!

The US does casseroles though, isn’t that a pretty broad “American” style of cooking? Although to be fair, I don’t think of them as coming to prominence until the 50s so they could be a product of more efficient ovens intersecting with wartime scarcity necessitating experimentation, and a bit of an outlier.

I don’t actually know how prevalent casseroles are in US cooking -- certainly they were very common in the 50s/60s, which was right around the time a lot of suburban building with new Mod Cons was going on, just after wartime scarcity. 

Some days I want to throw it all in a creek and go back to school to be a food anthropologist, guys.

Steve was literally not kidding at all when he talks about food in CA:WS "We used to boil everything." America's a nation of historical stew eaters, most of it because of westward expansion and the fact that stew is the most economical food prep method. A country of immigrants, pinching every penny, and trickling from one coast to the other isn't going to rely on an oven. It's only in the last century that we've really been expanding our culinary culture.

This is my theory, but I don’t even know how I would go about testing it, let alone supporting it with evidence. :D

Well, if you’ve ever had a popover, they’re basically the same thing. They’re rather like very crunch crepes if you could turn a crepe into a balloon.

man you haven't lived if you haven't had good crispy roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings. its literally one of the best parts of a roast dinner

See, and yorkshire puddings don’t exist in the US, as a cultural food. People make and eat them, of course, but it’s not a mainstream food by any measure. And that form of cooking -- batter into hot oil and then baked -- is much more likely to be a breakfast food (popovers and dutch baby are the more common varieties and both are very breakfast-slanted).

Wow. Masquerade on IRC was also my intro to RP, way back in the mid 90s

....either Masquerade was way bigger than I thought on IRC, or there’s a non-zero chance we were playing in the same room. (I can’t even remember the server or room name at this point, but I can’t imagine there were THAT many fandom-adjacent IRC Vampire games.)

He’s posted about it, but very unseriously. But you know, there’s always shit we ignore, both in terms of character behavior and plot point -- with seventy years of comics canon, that’s just gonna happen. My Steve also hasn’t experienced the Capwolf plotline firsthand, or dated Sharon Carter :D

Oh man I had forgotten about Milliways! I wasn’t a founder, technically speaking, but I was one of the early initial characters and I like to think I had a hand in helping to worldbuild. (”Fried paradoxes. They taste exactly like you think they won’t!”)

Well, it was digital-only and in terms of play it was more like an LJ or tumblr fandom RP -- we just used the Masquerade framework as our setting. I’ve never played a straight-up tabletop or LARP game with like, character sheets and dice and a DM and all.

I admit I figured out you were Steve within about... two posts, based solely on your writing style. I think it was one of Steve's war stories that was written very similar to your talk like a pirate day stories. But I have been part of the Cafe since maybe 2006 time frame, so I'm... a bit familiar.... with your style. And your Cap is lots of fun to play off of.

As is your Rhodey! :D I know I don’t do as much interacting just now as I have previously, but I’m working to get back to it (time constraints on reading the rp posts, mostly).
