Gosh, bringing back the old fic terms. I was nostalgic until people started saying "I'm too young for this I guess". Ami I old now?
Well... either you’re old now like the rest of us, or you were very precocious and got into fandom at a young age! :)

oh man. whump isn't a thing anymore???
Apparently we leave that up to canon now? The modern grimdark era of TV and the proliferation of non-network shows that can get full-on gory in a way that only films used to be able to seems to have quenched much of our thirst for blood. Which I suppose I’m okay with because my heart has become fragile and gentle with age and if whump were still as big a deal every other fic would probably have Bernie being tortured by ISIS for classified military secrets or something.

i love learning about tags i was the right age but in the wrong place for. but also, are the kids today not using squick? it's so all-around useful!
You know... I’m that rare soul who really dislikes the term “squick,” for two reasons. One of them is totally personal -- I was introduced to the term before I heard it in fandom, and its original meaning is gross as hell, so I shudder a little every time I hear it. Squick just sounds bloody to me.
The second reason is more divisive -- “squick” was often used, in my fandom circles, as a way for het shippers to talk about slash/femslash, and it was this supposedly fault-free way of saying “gay stuff makes me gag” while holding this moral high ground of “it’s not homophobia just a personal preference.” I mean we were still deep in the “WARNING: SLASH!!!! DON’T LIKE DON’T READ!!” era of fandom, and I read so many het fics now with background slash pairings that it may genuinely not be an issue if we bring the term back, but that’s my hesitation!

Whump is def Stargate-specific, though it may have caught on elsewhere, who knows?
Fanfolk dedicated enough to click the readmore, report in: where have you seen whump besides Stargate?
