Old impression methods are replaced with advanced techniques like Digital impressions and Analog impressions to improve the quality of the dental treatments.
Traditional laboratory-intensive methods are now being exchanged for more innovative and advanced techniques such as digital impressions and analog impressions that improve the diagnostic process and facilitate treatment.
Digital Impressions
The purpose of digital impressions is to be more patient-friendly and easier and faster to complete. An intraoral scanner that resembles an ordinary camera used to make a photo or video takes them. Digital scanners can now obtain high-quality video footage or photographs and provide a clear picture of what needs to be done to improve the oral health and esthetics of the patient.
Analog Impressions
This method involves the use of dental stone poured elastic impression materials. It is, in fact, a negative impression of the teeth and soft tissues of the patient. When they are ready to be placed in the mouth, the materials used are either semi-liquid or liquid. It may take several minutes to thicken and become an elastic solid, depending on the specific material used.
Finally, there is still insufficient evidence to prove that the benefits of digital impressions are overshadowing the traditional, analog approach. Both techniques seem to deliver equally accurate results at this point.
