A câmara estava pousada no chão. Disparei sem olhar. Estávamos em Barcelona, a explorar uma das ruelas apertadas do bairro gótico. O que podia ter saído vazio ou sem sentido, acabou por apanhar um instante quase coreografado — os passos, as luzes ao fundo, a ligeira inclinação da rua, tudo no seu lugar. Por acaso.

É este tipo de fotografia que me interessa: aquela em que o erro encontra equilíbrio. A que nasce do improviso, sem planeamento nem controlo. O Unfixed é isso mesmo — imagens que acontecem por pouco, e por sorte.

The camera was resting on the ground. I pressed the shutter without looking. We were in Barcelona, wandering through a narrow alley in the Gothic Quarter. What could’ve ended up empty or meaningless caught a moment that feels almost choreographed — the footsteps, the lights in the distance, the gentle slope of the street, all in place. By chance.

This is the kind of photography that matters to me: where the mistake finds balance. Where the unplanned carries weight. That’s what Unfixed is — images that happen barely, and by luck.

Shooting on film has been full of surprises. On this particular day, wandering through Seville—a city where we stayed for nearly a month—my Kodak Folding Brownie Sis-20 decided to let light leak into the frame without warning. It wasn’t planned or even wanted, but it was precisely this accident that gave the image a different atmosphere: a subtle, almost dreamy glow spread across the building’s façade and the people passing by.

What might have been seen as a mistake became an unexpected moment of beauty. It’s this ongoing collaboration between the photographer (my wife, in this case), the camera, the film, and chance that brings Unfixed to life—accepting each frame as it is: imperfect and surprising.

Fotografar em analógico tem sido surpreendente. Neste dia a passear em Sevilha, cidade onde ficamos quase um mês, a minha Kodak Folding Brownie Sis-20 decidiu deixar a luz entrar sem aviso. Não era algo planeado nem desejado, mas foi precisamente este acidente que deu à imagem uma sensação diferente: um brilho subtil, quase sonhador, espalhado pela fachada do edifício e pelas pessoas que passavam.

O que poderia ser visto como um erro tornou-se um momento inesperado de beleza. É esta colaboração constante entre o fotógrafo (a minha mulher neste caso), a câmara, o filme e o acaso que dá vida ao Unfixed—aceitar cada fotograma como ele é, imperfeito e surpreendente.

Sometimes shooting analog simply means accepting the unexpected. That day, as I photographed ducks on the lake, the light slipped onto the roll without any warning. What initially felt like a mistake ended up becoming a poetic detail, almost as if the light itself wanted to be part of that very moment.

It's these casual encounters that define Unfixed: images born from the interplay between me, the camera, the film, and inevitably, chance. Every shot is a conversation with unpredictability—and that's exactly where analog photography comes alive—in the beauty of embracing what cannot be controlled.

Às vezes, fotografar em analógico significa simplesmente aceitar o inesperado. Neste dia, enquanto fotografava patos no lago, a luz decidiu infiltrar-se pelo rolo sem aviso prévio. Aquilo que inicialmente parecia um erro, acabou por se tornar num detalhe poético, quase como se a própria luz também quisesse fazer parte daquele instante.
