VISUALIZING THE FOURTH DIMENSION: ALICIA BOOLE STOTT
The Anglo-Irish daughter of mathematian George Boole (the creator of Boolean algebra) Alicia Boole (1860-1940) received instructions in mathematics from Princeton mathematician Charles Hinton. She was 17 years old when Hinton introduced her to geometric models and she quickly developed the ability to visualize in a fourth dimension.
Boole-Stott calculated the three-dimensional sections of regular four-dimensional polytopes (that is, the analogies to the Platonic Solids in four dimensions) and discovered many of the four-dimensional semi-regular polytopes . She also found that there were exactly six regular polytopes in four dimensions and that they are bounded by 5, 16 or 600 tetrahedra, 8 cubes, 24 octahedra or 120 dodecahedra. She then produced three-dimensional central cross-sections of all the six regular polytopes by purely Euclidean constructions and synthetic methods for the simple reason that she had never learned any analytic geometry.
Boole is renowned for her drawings and paper models of polytope cross-sections.
Over the course of her lifetime, Boole met two important geometers of the period, P. H. Schoute and H. S. M. Coxeter, with whom she collaborated on various aspects of four-dimensional geometry. She received an honorary Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Groeningen in 1914.
