It often felt like he was a single parent.
After school events, projects, family dinners, birthdays -- it all felt like he was doing it alone for the most part, with a piece missing. Getting married was supposed to feel like a partnership, but it hadn't felt that way so far -- granted, her job made good money, she got to see the world, it meant she was missing out on what was happening at home.
Jaime missed her when she was there, sometimes more than when she was gone; the kids had grown complacent and indifferent, happy when she was around, fine when she wasn't, and that made him feel some kind of way. It always felt like he was an interloper in her marriage to her job -- and that was no way to live.
He waited at the airport for her to come off the plane, being one of the last to always do so. He bounced on the balls of his feet, excited to see her, but feeling on edge. Never knowing how much time they would have together until she was pulled onto the job again. When he saw her, he smiled and waved at her, shoving his hands back into his pockets.
The kids had opted to stay home this time and he wondered idly if that would disappoint her ...
