❮♚❯—“It wouldn’t hurt to at least ask.” Eris handed Octavian the peas from his freezer.
She finally on reprieve and the Lt. Col kept his promise he was to shower her around Leeds. However, Eris promised her mother and grandfather a visit…. She failed to mention the Lt.Col that she attempted to fight was going to be with her…. He also failed to mention a few… key details.
“You know- if you would have told me that you knew my family… I might have mentioned something…” She shrugged teasingly as she took the now thawing carrots from him.
“I thought -thankyou- darling, that the possibility of this tiny brown, angry American was related to the whitest, tallest and meanest Southern prick I know.?!“ he hissed putting the peas on his shoulder.
“Dagenhart is not a common name and SHH- the phones ringing.” She walked to the other side of the island counter. They met him at the JAG off her mother and Grandfather work at. It was strange that her mother didn’t mention she had an assistant- but for the moment she didn’t have the room to exactly pry. She hadn’t exactly been forthright with them either… on a far greater scale. They had a moment to share a few quick one-liners about the tussle that was transpiring between Octavian and Augustine. Neither of them knew that the pair were …old acquaintances…
Eris thought the fellow was pretty cool and wondered if he had free time. Working under her mother had to be boring. She fingered why not all three hangouts. Two Brits and an American. Nothing could really go wrong. She listened for the shift in tone before getting excited at hearing his voice. “ Hey! Jaime?” She pointed to the phone and gave Octavian a thumbs up. “It’s me Eris, from yesterday. Hey Octavian and I are thinking of maybe going to a movie and catching a bite to eat a pub or something. Thought you might want to join us?”
“Say, yes- or we’ll be sad!” Octavian shouted.
It was far too often that the JAG offices were pretty boring. Well, at least to a man who was used to seeing action and not pushing papers. While the itch to be out there in the world, fighting its necessary evils was strong, he also knew that he wasn't ready for that either. After everything, integrating back into the workforce was enough of a challenge as it was.
Simply put, it was the inaction of sitting behind a desk that was enough to drive him to distraction. He wiled the days away with pushing papers on court marshals and leaves of absence. Or whatever else Augustine didn't feel like doing himself, even though he worked for his daughter officially.
The fight had been the most entertaining thing he'd seen in the office since he'd arrived. He'd been told to not intervene, let it play out and that he did while having a chin-wag with his boss' daughter. It had been a pretty entertaining day.
He had expected nothing out of it from there.
Being able to go home at a decent time of day was one of the few perks of being a paper pusher for JAG. He walked to his car after being told he could go home when his phone rang in his pocket. He pressed the button to unlock his car with one hand, the other pressing against his fatigues to find it. He didn't recognize the number straight away, but he answered it anyway. "Hello?" he said, opening the car door and getting in, tossing his bag across himself to the passenger side.
He hadn't been expecting that.
"Oh hey," he listened and a smile crossed his face, checking his watch as he turned his car on, the call going to the Bluetooth instead, their voices now coming from the car speakers. He put his phone on charge and adjusted the volume. "Well yes of course -- I would be delighted, wouldn't want to make Octavian sad or anything." He reached to pull his seatbelt on. "When? I'm leaving work now and I'd rather not go out in fatigues," he teased.
