Was an awesome morning to volunteer with @auwahi non-profit native forest restoration as they do their yearly workshop with @kamehamehamaui. It's vitally important that the next generation, who will be the future caregivers of the world, have a relationship with the community of plants that are the native forests of their home. The ‘olena I harvested has been made into a fine powder and here you see us dyeing our lole (clothes) to a beautiful earthy yellow! There is so much to be learned from this art of using natural dyes to give color, vibrancy and meaning to what we wear. When we wear clothing that we have gone through the process of creating for ourselves, we begin a journey in defiance to consumerism, in direct opposition to the “throw-away” culture that exists in modern society. We will place more value in what we wear when we make it by hand because we know the amount of energy that went into it, those people who we were with when we prepared it, and how we felt during its creation! This feeling and experience CAN NOT be bought or sold! What are the #true costs of the things we choose to buy? We should ask ourselves that questions with every purchase… Our #indigenous #ancestors were in living relationship to the #world around them and their observations revealed to them how to live in abundance and meaning, right down to what they adorned themselves with!
