35: Beech Tail
Killing Flystar
Palefire stood in front of Redpaw, her fur spiked in anger. Her claws slid out, sinking into the dry earth beneath her. Flystar met her gaze with rage, half crouched and ready to spring. A slew of warriors stood behind him. Most of the SkyClan cats looked just as angry and hateful as their leader.
“You should have gotten rid of him a long time ago!” Flystar spat as his warriors circled around Palefire and Redpaw.
The fox growled, his lips curling as he turned to glare at the surrounding cats.
“You keep saying that,” Palefire hissed. “You’ve become awfully repetitive.”
Flystar bared his teeth.
“I don’t care. If you wish, you can picture me ripping that thing’s throat out and feeding its body to the crows!” Flystar took a step forward. The rest of his warriors followed suit, closing in the circle around them.
Palefire kept her eyes on Flystar. Redpaw was nearly twice the size of every cat facing them, and he was nearly a trained warrior now. He could easily handle several of the SkyClan cats.
“Are you really willing to risk your warriors’ lives just because you’re too stupid to see that Redpaw is just as part of this forest as we are?” Palefire lashed her tail, taking a step closer to Flystar. The grey tom’s face, split by a dull pink scar from ear tip to chin, was scowling with rage. “Are you willing to risk one of your own lives?”
“I’d kill you before you even get a claw in me!” Flystar snarled back. "Step aside, fox-lover," Flystar hissed. "I'm only here for your pet monster's blood." The menacing tom narrowed his eyes. "But I don't mind ripping out the throat of a filthy fox-loving traitor, if it comes to it."
Palefire flattened her ears. Flystar flicked his tail, and the next moment, his six warriors launched at them. Redpaw yelped, but it soon turned to a snarl as he attacked. Flystar lunged straight at Palefire, his claws stretching for her throat.
Palefire leapt straight up into the air, swiveling her body around to land on top of Flystar. Her weight wrenched him over and he fell to the forest floor with a thud, Palefire’s claws tearing at his back. She saw Redpaw fighting four warriors at once, swatting them away like annoying kits, but the next moment, Flystar was on top of her.
The SkyClan leader’s teeth sank into Palefire’s foreleg and wrenched her back. Palefire’s yowl of pain was cut off as Flystar pressed his paws against her neck. She could barely breath as Flystar tore at her throat with thorn-sharp claws and the pain in her leg was blinding, but her instinct took over. She managed to twist away before Flystar could tear out her throat and rolled back onto her paws. Her foreleg was soaked with blood now, and she felt blood seeping into her pelt under her chin. Soaking the fur down her chest.
Flystar bared his teeth and leapt several tail-lengths into the air, soaring over Palefire’s head. He landed on Redpaw’s back, causing the fox to collapse underneath the sudden weight. Palefire launched herself at Flystar, but she was tackled back to the ground. A second later, she recognized Hawktail. He raked his hind paws over her belly for a few heartbeats before Palefire squirmed out from under him.
Redpaw had shaken off Flystar, but now five separate warriors were fighting the apprentice. Redpaw’s blows were losing power as he lost blood. Palefire crouched and shot forward, shoving past Hawktail. As her body surged past the enemy warrior, her claws raked across his side, tearing through his pelt with ease. Hawktail yowled in surprise as blood started to pour down his body from the large wound stretching from hip to shoulder, and soon began to stager away from the battle.
A second warrior stumbled after him, looking disoriented, blood soaking the side of his face. Palefire turned back and leapt forward, landing once again on Flystar’s back. This time, she dug her claws on either side of his body, clinging to him with all her might. Praying that StarClan would forgive her, she sank her teeth into the back of his neck, delivering the same killing bite that was used to kill prey.
A yowl of shock and anger came from Flystar, but a heartbeat later, he stumbled underneath Palefire, and was limp.
His warriors halted in their attack, staring in shock and horror as their leader fell limp beneath Palefire. The ThunderClan warrior sprang from the SkyClan leader’s body and shoved past the enemy patrol before they could react. She butted Redpaw with her head, steering him away. Together they sprinted through the forest. A few heartbeats later, yowls of rage and grief sounded from behind them.
Palefire felt her heart skip a beat at the thought of what she had just done. She had just taken one of Flystar’s lives. She knew he was a young leader, only a few seasons into having his nine lives, and this was probably only the second or third time he had lost one. He would be back, but Palefire had still killed him. She had never killed any cat before, it was against the warrior code to kill when it could be avoided. But she also knew that killing Flystar was the only way to escape a battle that was six against two.
She tried to clear her head, only focusing on the thundering pawsteps of herself and Redpaw. Her vision was blurry though, and her paws kept catching on roots and vines. Suddenly, she stumbled, completely falling forward. She crashed to a halt at the base of a tree, blood swelling from her neck and belly, as well as dripping from her foreleg.
Palefire was gasping for breath as Redpaw halted and turned back for her. She couldn’t hear what he was saying as he tried to nudge her to her paws, his yips turning to desperate cries.
“He’ll be okay,” a voice whispered. Palefire tried to look around, her green eyes widening as she searched for the voice’s owner.
Beside Redpaw, who was still frantically trying to get Palefire to stand, the dim shape of a cat Palefire would always recognize shimmered in the filtered autumn light.
Sunfur was staring sadly down at her sister, her red pelt glimmering faintly with stars. Palefire choked out a sob.
“He’s going to have to leave you for now,” Sunfur mewed, “but he will be protected. So will you.”
“N-no!” Palefire hissed, trying to stand. She fell again, her blood soaking into the forest floor.
“You will see him again,” Sunfur mewed reassuringly. “But he has to leave this place for now.”
Redpaw suddenly yipped in surprise, staring right at Sunfur's ghost.
“Y- You!" He stammered, his red fur bristling with shock at the glowing form in front of him. "Wait. I- I know you!” His eyes were wide with recognition.
“Yes, you do. And now you have to trust me.” Sunfur reached out and touched noses with the fox. Light seemed to seep from her pelt into his, and he turned away from Palefire. The next moment, they were racing away into the trees, away from the Clans.
Palefire lowered her head to the ground, trying to steady her breathing. She wasn’t sure how long she lay there before she heard voices. It was Muddyfoot and Frosttail, she recognized their scents, but the next moment, there was only darkness.
