the inherent tragedy in being an older sibling
no cuz like.
donut trusts that things will work out between him and golf ball, he trusts in himself to manage fine without signing one's deal, he trusts his teammates to accomodate him in fields hes lacking, and he trusts theyll do the same for him. golfball has to trust that her team isnt trying to sabotage her or themselves just because they dont follow her every move, she needs to learn to trust her team even when they arent as loyal or dependable as tennis ball, she has to trust that he wont be completely lost without her guiding him the whole way. black hole has to learn to trust his team even when they go completely against his wishes and feed into his nightmares. fanny and ice cube trust in each other to solve the one mystery, they lose their agency when signing deals, but have to have trust their respective teammates are willing to help them regardless. pen has to trust he can make meaningful friendships even if theyre short lived. tennis ball has to trust he can manage on a team without his single constant. book has to trust she can make do without freesmart.
pencil, contrary to most of these story beats, has the exact opposite problem- no trust but all the agency. in the exit, as most typically do, she trusted the exitors to help find a way out even when it meant getting hurt in the process. she trusted what little agency left was enough to, if not force more to come her way, then to grant access to the outside world. once this happens, once shes granted the agency to finally choose for herself, she chooses to not trust anyone on any of her teams or even the hosts of the show. her old friends want nothing to do with her, so trust is like a deadweight on her conscience anyway.
even one is intimately familiar with trust and agency, feeding into the notion both are just tokens of persuasion nowadays, though breaking and losing arent arent foreign concepts either. she felt like had no agency when she was at the playground, often being ignored and looked over, and what little she did have was entrusted to three when they messed with the yoylite- trust that was broken the second three shared her secret. and youd think after this, one would have none left, and youd be right. in a way. as one crushed three into pieces and shattered her into rocks, she trusted three would feel the same sense of betrayal, the same sense of rejection, the same sense of helpless and hopelessness she always had.
