I wish I could’ve sent half of my row into guillotine. Person to my left kept talking throughout the movie despite being constantly being sushed. Had the phone out, even during the quiet scenes ugh! A few times I overheard the person say like they weren’t sure what happened and I wanted to be like it’s cos you’re talking during the fucking movie!

Anyway, they even chatted to themselves during the Q&A so damn rude and inconsiderate. Then during the Q&A, a couple sat next to me and one of em didn’t know how to use their phone and yet they still wanted to take pictures. The couple even bickered as one of em held the phone up and of course, the phone wasn’t on silent so the phone rings and they’re not used to the phone so they don’t know how to shut it off.

I’m in the middle seat, second row just taking this all in and just yuck, yuck, yuck.

The movie itself: Mary, Queen of Scots was fine. The costumes and sets were great. Good acting, the back and forth cutting between the Queen’s was pretty neat. The story itself was interesting but not super compelling, lots of talking of power, passing of letters and backstabbing. It is interesting that Mary in this film is really self-aware of her surroundings, doesn’t trust men with good reason and other things, I won’t go beyond that if anyone wants to see the film but I didn’t find it boring and it’s an excellent film on a technical level.

Mostly I just want to spend my week scolding people in Saoirse Ronan’s accent. You dare speak like that your Queen!

Trivia from the Q&A:

A lot of the costumes for the dudes were denim. And on the whole, the film was a mix of historic and creative licensing (duh). Although for the historical influence, the costume designer based her work on paintings from the period.

It’s also interesting when they made the movie they’d imprint dirt on the skirts and clothing which is something I’d never thought of until tonight when they’re in the rains and stuff. It’s also to get ahead of continuity but also they just trusted that they could get the clothes clean on time to shoot. No backup outfits because of their budget. 14 weeks / over 2, 000 costumes. Remarkable work by herself and her team and of course, the director for hiring her in the first place.

Lastly, there’s an Elizabeth: the Golden Age easter egg in the movie because she had worked on that film and a necklace from that film, made sense for this film as well.
