From the Shadows
Written for the Drarry Discord April drabble challenge. The prompt was "flourish" with a word count of 177.
I watch you, after the war. In the beginning, I watched you as I always had done — from afar, hidden in shadows and around corners. I watch as you shake hands, murmur condolences, force smiles that you don’t feel. I watch as you are once again forced into a role you don’t want, pampered and preened until you are the perfect poster boy; the heroic Auror, the most eligible bachelor at the Ministry balls.
I watch as you wilt and fade. As the spark that had pulled me in dims, until one day it is gone completely.
I watch and I watch until one day; one day, I realise that you are watching back. How long, I wonder. How long were we watching each other without realising, caught in a never-ending dance?
I watch you walk closer, take my hand. I watch you as we start this small, tentative thing. As it grows, burning brightly. I watch you leave the Ministry behind, safe now in our cottage by the sea.
I watch as you flourish, finally.
