“I just didn’t think you hated me.” She kicked a coin in the doorway and set her stare into a glare. “Take your sin-coins back,” she hissed at the Guard, stricken into silence behind Kit. “If you don’t want me at the Fair, Merkit, just say so! I’m not as bad as you think, but if you want me to stay away, by all means I will. Just tell me so.”
“All right,” Kit said carefully, ignoring the pained, angry shine in her eyes. “I will not say you cannot go to the Fair, because it is a public event, but if you do go, you must stay away from the Royal family. I cannot and will not excuse your disrespectful behaviour towards them again.”
“You must be ashamed, Kit,” Pippa said testily, glancing at the Guard over his shoulder. “Do you know that you’re in charge of a bunch of philanderers?” She spun on her heel and stalked off towards town.
Byrn, Rhyn, Erlion, and Novan stammered to explain, but Kit hushed them with a wave of his hand. “Just stop,” he said wearily. “I am going to meet the traders.” He left without a word, trudging tiredly towards the market square.
Pippa sidestepped a cart, her right foot sinking into a puddle in the gutter. She pulled her foot out sharply as a bombous man shoved her aside; she teetered for a moment when a child ran by chasing a monkey, and she lost her balance. She fell hard, hand splashing in the puddle. She sat there for a moment, looking dazed.
A hand grabbed her arm then and hauled her easily to her feet just as a cart rolled by through the puddle. The trader called out on the other side, oblivious to the girl he almost ran over.
“Alright there, Pippa?” a loud voice boomed in her ear.
Pippa turned to see Tern, a burly, friendly trader with a gap in his teeth. He had laughing blue eyes and they searched Pippa for injuries.
She smiled at him. “I’m alright, thanks, Tern.” She followed him to his cart, a cluster of shiny baubles and buttons he stole, but claimed they were jewels from queens in times gone by. There was a quiet bubble around his cart as people avoided his illegally acquired wares. She sat beside him on a lumpy yellow cushion behind his cart.
“Are you sure?” Tern asked. “You look a little lost. Aren’t you usually skipping between the carts and looking pretty?”
“I’m just not up to it today,” she said, looking at the strings hanging from his cat. “This one’s new,” she observed, plucking from a peg one of bright yellow beads and purple glass gems. “Where’d you get it from?”
"The Queen of Merchants down on the south coast gave it to me as a reward for helping her with some rather raunchy robbers," he said. The story was likely to change and grow from customer to customer. "Now what about you? What's got you down?"
"Not what," Pippa said, replacing the string. If she had kept the Guard's money she could have bought it off Tern. "Who. Merkit. He said he didn't want me at the Fair."
"What?" Tern roared. "He shouldn't tell you what to do, Pippa. Why did he say that?"
"Remember what happened last year?"
Tern thought for a moment and then guffawed loudly, slapping his knee. "Doesn't he have a sense of humour? The brat deserved it!"
"That's what I said," Pippa mumbled. "He thinks the Royal family hates me. Which they probably do. Merkit said I don't know how to keep my mouth shut."
"And what's the problem with that?"
"Apparently everything," Pippa said. "I won't go to the Fair. I can find something to do here.”
Tern looked her straight in the eye. “Pip, you go to that Fair if you want. Don’t let Merkit tell you what to do. He’s a sap. A lousy sap. If you wanna go to the Fair and have fun, you are entitled to it.”
Pippa rose, interrupting him. “Don’t talk smart, Tern. It’s bad for business.” She tugged the string of yellow beads and purple gems from his cart and slipped it into her pocket, melting easily into the flow of the crowd. She hadn’t gone far before she heard him call out behind her.
“You’re heartless, Pip!”
019. I am genuinely afraid of clowns, and basically anything that is wearing a mask. I can't explain it, it just unnerves me.
