❝ i’m on your side ❞

It was just a bad time and a bad place. Quinn couldn’t be blamed for the turn of events, he’d just been greeting an old friend. But after Allison’s run-in with a bunch of ex-military guns-for-hire who had decided to make her their own personal Operation game, anyone who fit that description sent her in a tailspin. It should have been expected, really. She’d met his friends before, knew their type. Hell, she’d been in the military herself so that should have provided a second thought before she lost it. But all she’d seen was Jack glance at her a second too long before leaning in to say something to the stranger. He’d turned his head to look at her as well and that sharp jawline peaked something in her.
Next thing the two men knew, Allison’s Glock was trained on both Quinn and his friend, blood pulsing so hard that their shouts were muffled in her ears. They might as well have been yelling at the pavement for all the good it was doing.
“Stay back!” It took a moment before it sunk in that the shrill, choked up voice that had just screamed a warning came from herself. Quinn’s pal had apparently gotten the warning, hands held up in a gesture of surrender. He, however, had other ideas.
“Allie? Allie, come on. It’s me. Put the gun down and let’s talk, okay? Just come talk to me, tell me what’s wrong.”
“You’re–you’re working with them! With him!” He twitches the slightest bit when she gestures towards the other man with the gun, waving it around as if it was a toy or a baton and not a deadly weapon. If there was anyone who knew about proper gun safety, it was her. Waving it around like a monkey with a banana went against everything she’d been taught. Yet another sign that something was off with Miss Always In Control.
“I’m not. I’m on your side. He’s a friend who I used to work with. He’s not part of the group–,” he didn’t get to finish before she had the gun pointed back at him.
“He is! He is, I know he is! I remember him! He was there, he-he-he helped cut me open.” Putting words to the memories caused Allison to gasp as images flickered in front of her eyes. Gory pictures of things that would haunt her for years to come. Although it wasn’t pleasant, fat tears rolling down her cheeks, it provided the opportunity for Quinn to safely move closer and directly in front of her.
“He’s not, I promise. He came with me to help get you out, maybe that’s why you remember him but he wasn’t apart of the group that hurt you. He wouldn’t be alive if he was.” There’s a hardened tone to his last statement, a hint of what had happened while she had been unconscious. It’s distracting enough for him to gently tug the gun out of her hands, tossing it to the side in a show that he wasn’t going to hurt her, and to get it out of her reach. “You could kick my ass if you wanted to, even without a gun. But trust me, Allie. I wouldn’t do anything to hurt you, I promise.”
It seems stupid, once his words sink in and she finally sees him standing there with his arms open, just waiting for her to choose to turn to him for comfort should she decide to. He had always been her safe place before anything had happened. And he had been the one to sit by her bedside for weeks while her body rebuilt itself and came back to life again. Why, would he all of a sudden betray her? He hadn’t once given her one reason not to trust him.
Gently she places a quivering hand in his open one, collapsing in his arms when he laces their fingers together. “I’m sorry,” she whispers. “I-I-I shouldn’t have…I’m sorry….” Quinn holds her tight, shushing her while he holds her tight.
“It’s gonna be alright. We’ll make it through.”
