I think the rise in producers getting writers credit on songs besides some producers also being songwriters might have something to do with hip hop being so prevalent. I think producers get writing credit for supplying the beats. But don't quote me. I just vaguely remember reading something about it.

The article I read about auto tune talked about all the ways vocals are played with—and the first big use of it was on a Cher song in 1998 or so. It was a looong article, but what producers do now is way more than beats. I’m sure you’re right that the producer really became prominent with hip hop.
