Kinda want to write Nier Automata fic, but I need to replay the game first. And before that I need to finish P5, which I am totally enjoying, but whenever I’m not playing it my mind is on Nier.
I want fic that happens post-ending E because I keep thinking about how the characters will address everything that’s happened/been revealed. As hopeful as the ending is, the best-case scenario still means 9S and 2B have so much shit to work through and the future is one giant question mark. Which to me isn’t a failing of the game -- I LOVED the true ending and felt rewarded by it, and it gives me so much good material to play with.
I’ve seen some complaints about the lack of character development, and while it’s true there’s not much in the way of growth and learning, that’s... kind of the point? They’re stuck in a cycle until, potentially, ending E. Furthermore, Nier Automata isn’t a game built on the kind of character and plot development you’d find in a 60+ hour RPG. Instead Nier relies on reveals to give characters depth and drive the narrative. Less growing, more peeling back layers, and those layers are really interesting.
(I guess it’s the pods that get the best character development in the traditional sense since they develop their own wills separate from their intended functions which enables ending E to happen. A2 also gets some development, although half of it comes from the stage play.)
Anyway, I think it would be fun to explore what happens next because of all the relationship... issues... that have to be resolved.
And I just want 2B, 9S, and A2 to be stuck with each other, figuring out what to do from now on. A2 WOULD BE AMAZING and by amazing I mean she would be the most normal of the trio with zero tolerance for relationship drama but she has all of 2B’s memories without the emotional baggage so A2 has the clearest, most objective view of that whole mess. She’s like. A tsundere older sister. Who is also a berserker. And she threatens 9S with bodily harm whenever he sasses her, which is all the time.
9S: You know, it really throws me off that you have 2B’s face when your personalities are nothing alike. A2: Say that again, you little shit. 9S: You see? Nothing alike. A2: *pounds Virtuous Grief together* When I’m done with you the pods won’t be able to put you back together again. Pod 042: Furthermore, it would be more correct to say that the facial structure of the Type B model is based on the prototype Type A model. 9S: Yeah, yeah. A2: Both of you shut the HELL up.
