So we've had common mallow take over our backyard garden this year (HUGE garden) and I decided to play with it because it's an edible plant. Nothing is toxic but the roots aren't really "edible" given how fibrous they are. They can be used in other ways though and I've just boiled a bunch and will be trying to make meringue out of the water.
But the seeds y'all. Tiny and a pain in the ass to harvest and apparently best done before they're matrure. I tried some raw and all I can say was it tasted "green" so I decided to lightly toast some in a pan with a little olive oil.
THE FLAVOUR!
Damn!! Even one tiny seed has SO much flavour packed into it! I can't even explain the taste. There is some nuttiness to it and still some "green". A little earthiness like a Portabello mushroom but the largest component I just don't have anything to compare it to.
It's kinda like if pumpkin seeds were More but even that isn't quite right.
I will say that I'm hooked though!! Definitely worth the fiddly harvesting process and I will absolutely be trying this again with the next batch.
