It was nauseating, borderline embarrassing, how nervous Hyunjin was.
They surprisingly succeeded in making plans for their first date, given the yapping session they had last night. During which Hyunjin mentioned how fascinating he found the gemstones she used and their different cuts. He loved listening to her talk about how the stones were arranged by her designers. The process of deciding on the cut, the carat, the casing of the precious gems, and the clips of the jewelry was a delicate procedure carried out through the collaborative effort of far more people than some think. He found it so satisfying the way she explained the methods they used and how there was so much more to it than what met the eye. His clear interest led her to suggest they attend a private preview of her upcoming winter collection and a few pieces planned for release even later, for spring. He beamed every time he even thought about those words, leaving her mouth ‘private preview’, just the two of them.
One thing was for sure: they both had agreed to complete privacy. That's why they planned to go late at night to one of her warehouses on the outskirts of the city, view the jewelry, then go to a street food market just before closing, when there aren't many people, walk around, and get a bite to eat. It sounded good, so good. Hyunjin was running that plan through his head over and over again, thinking of how to make it better. I could grab food in advance? No, that'd be stupid; it would just marinate in the car. I could find the number of one of the vendors, and make sure they have her favourite dishes? No, I don't even know from which stall she will want to eat. What should I wear? Maybe formal because it is high-end jewelry? But then again, we are going for street food after. Should I take my car to get washed before I pick her up? Yeah, ok, I'll do that.
That's another thing they had agreed on: no one else. And they meant it. So much so that they told their respective drivers to rest for the night.
They talked on the phone for hours on Monday night. While she was folding her clothes and he was cooking, they were still talking, talking about art world drama they knew, his favourite coffee spots and bakeries in his hometown, her favourite shoe designers. At some point, they both went to get a dessert from their respective kitchens and ate slowly until their eyes were getting heavy, their words were getting slower, voices were getting more raspy, and giggles were becoming more frequent. She was the one to say goodbye first, which was, of course, understandable considering the early start of her every work day, and whilst his started pretty early as well, it did so a few hours after hers. “You know, more company CEOs and owners I've met barely clock in for work like you do,” he said as the conversation was coming to an end. Which was true usually, the owners rarely went into the office to talk to staff and be directly involved in their production. “Yeah, well, technically I'm also the creative director in my employee contract,” she said with a soft smile like plugging in her phone to charge. He giggled, “Employee contract? And who is your employer, huh?” “I am,” she answered, making both of them chuckle.
By the time they got off the call, it was well over the time she usually went to bed on a workday. The late hour wasn’t the only difference when she laid her head down, she also had the biggest, most stupidest smile on her face. It wasn’t just that she liked talking with him, that was obvious, but that it was easy; it didn't take a push or any effort. There was no awkward moment while wondering what question to ask. The conversation migrated from topic to topic in smooth waves that were barely noticeable.

As the day of the date came, Hyunjin got out of bed like it was his first day in the army. They made plans for 10 pm so they could get something to eat by midnight in the quiet of the lonely street lights. Getting up from his bed, he walked over to his phone to turn off his alarm and, along with that, sent her a short good morning message. She must be in her office already, he thought, taking into account the time.
His schedule that day was just like any other: go over some things with his bandmates and publicist in a morning meeting, then a recording session in the sound studio finished off with some time in the dance studio where he planned to finish up a choreography for a song he’d been working on for quite a while. Every day in his life looked different. Some days he had a lot of free time, some of them were unbelievably packed, at least this one was somewhere in the middle, so he wouldn’t be exhausted by the end of the night.
After he took a shower and put on a more casual, low-key outfit, his phone lit up with a notification.
He was smiling from ear to ear, to say the least. He wanted to get the day over with as soon as possible to start getting ready. That's when he remembered- he was to grab a taxi to the meet-up spot with the group because he had given his car to be thoroughly washed, including the inside, because you can't have a woman like that in a dirty car.
As he went about his day, his phone would ding from time to time, and he would leap to reach for it, didn’t matter if he was in a meeting, recording, or doing any other kind of chore. The texts about what each of them was about to eat, or do, what they looked forward to, what stressed them out, made him realize how much he enjoyed the domestic aspect of their conversations. They didn’t need to be talking about world events, art, or fashion to find comfort in each other. The simplicity of it grounded him, made him feel like there was always someone he could lean on if he needed to.
The time to start dance practice came, and he sent a quick text letting her know he would be focusing as deeply as possible for the duration of the practice.
It was about four hours later when Hyunjin decided to call it a day and continue the choreography next time. He was breathing heavily, lying on his back on the floor of the studio. Only his deep breaths and the faded music could be heard. He closed his eyes and rested his forearms on his forehead, happily realizing that from that moment on until the end of the day, he could spend as much time giving her attention and losing his mind over the fact that he had a date with her as much as he wanted. At the same time, the little overthinking habit snuck up on him. Maybe I shouldn’t bug her throughout her day? I don't want to be overbearing; she already seemed hesitant when we were about to kiss back at her apartment the other day. I should be careful not to scare her away. It was about 6 pm, and he took a taxi to the carwash to pick up his own car and drive home.
Checking his phone as he got in his car, he stifled a giggle at her complaining that the consultant she had a meeting with was three minutes late. For her, being on time meant being 5-10 minutes early, and what was ‘on time’ for other people meant being on the verge of being late for her. So three minutes…three minutes was scandalous. As they got to know each other, Hyunjin realized that the entire company's organization depended on her schedule. If someone caused her to be late, she would be late for her next appointment as well, and all the people waiting for her go-ahead and approval would consequently also have to wait and therefore breach deadlines of their own. Tardiness was unacceptable, and it wasn't because of manners or professionalism to her; it was basic decency, the bare minimum. Hyunjin did love that about her- how relaxed and fun she was, but no matter if it was about her personal or professional life, she ran a strict program.
While reversing the car, he cleared his voice, trying to make sure his voice came out smooth, and clicked the microphone icon on his phone. While recording the voice message, he reluctantly gave her a short update on his day, saying he had finished dance practice and was heading home to get ready. “My appointment with you is still happening, right, Miss?” he said lastly, his sly smile soaking into his velvety soft voice. He kept the voice message short, because, still, careful not to scare her away.

Her phone lit up just as she was gathering her things in her bag, which, despite its exaggerated size, was still getting filled to the brim. Mateo had just left her office for the third time that day, coming in and out between her meetings the entire day. She sighed when she saw the notification, not out of irritation but out of relief. Especially since it was a voice message, his voice being her guilty pleasure. Listening to his message had her biting her lower lip, trying to suppress her smile. It wasn’t anything extraordinary, just his sweet voice with the dulled growl of his engine. When it ended, she quickly answered, confirming their date and telling him she was about to start heading home too.
She clicked send just as Maya pushed the door of her office open, “What are we over here smiling about?” she said with a teasing smirk. Her boss looked back at her, side-eyeing her with her head tilting, knowing damn well she knew why she was smiling. “Ok, ok, so he’s doing well, I take it?” she said, “More than well,” the other woman replied with a downturned smile.

As he parked and got out of the car, he reacted to her message with a heart and smiled dumbly. While going up to his apartment, he sent her a quick mirror selfie using the mirror in the elevator and sent it to her as a reply photo on ig. Oh god almighty, her eyes widened. A second later, she responded with a photo of her own still from her office.
Both giggled at each other's reactions to the photos, getting more and more open and comfortable with a romantic dynamic between each other.
As the sun set, they both had a quick snack and relaxed for a bit before starting to get ready…well, she did. Hyunjin showered and immediately went to his closet. He was an idol, so he had worn his fair share of extravagant and fashionable outfits, but this was very different. He didn’t have a stylist with him or someone to hand him perfectly tailored clothes to his measurements. And he was going out with a woman who was considered by the public as chic, a muse, one of the pillars of fashion. Her style weaved together timeless pieces with a trendsetter’s flair; of course, he had to look good. But it’s a casual date. And that was the hard part about it: he had to look fashionable and worthy of going on a date with such a woman, but still didn’t want to look like he was fishing for paparazzi at Paris Fashion Week. Just a date. He repeated, already getting frustrated with himself.
After about an hour of changing outfit because a hoodie and light wash jeans seem too casual, and then with the next outfit idea he put on he thought but a button down and a blazer seem too extra even if their baggy, for the third outfit, I’m sure I’ve heard her mention that she doesn’t like jeans with this cut, for the next, well I should probably stick to basics more this is too out-there and colorful. Finally, he decided on a black leather jacket, a well-fitted t-shirt, and dark wash jeans that were slightly faded in the front. For accessories, he kept his usual earring stack in his ear piercings that she’d complemented him on once and added a couple of rings. Not after he had groomed himself obsessively, making sure he smelt good, his nails were short and tidy, and his hair was fluffy but not too messy.
As a contrast to him, when she got home, she spent almost an hour talking to a friend of hers on the phone while petting her cat. Then she took an hour-long bath while watching her favourite series on her laptop, sat atop her bathtub tray, and sipped wine. After that, strolling into the kitchen in her towel, she cut some brie for herself and fed her cat. After she did her skin care, she entered her closet and chose her clothes fairly quickly. A dark red tight turtle neck with buttons going from the point of the middle of her clavicle down, paired with bell-bottom low-rise jeans. It's gonna get chilly outside, maybe I should take a jacket…actually, that’s his job, never mind. After doing her lip combo for the night, she only put on some concealer and made sure her lashes were on fleek, and added a little smokiness to her eyes.
By 9:20 p.m., he got in his car and drove to a florist. The night they planned the date, he had gotten in contact with a florist and arranged for a bouquet to be made with white, pink, and deep red peonies. When he picked up the fresh flowers, he headed straight to her place. At exactly 9:50 p.p., he pulled over his car at the back of her apartment building. Not that there were paparazzi or anything in the front, it was just what they had agreed on, since it was more private, no doorman or anyone else. As he got out of the car with the flowers, he called her and leaned on the front door. “Hey, handsome,” she picked up the phone on the second ring, the music she’d put on while getting ready still playing in the background. He smiled and put his head down, amused at her bold tone, “You having a good time getting ready, pretty?” She giggled, “Mhm, why, do you happen to be downstairs?”, ”Yeah, I'm gonna have to cut your fun short,” he answered in a honey-dipped voice. She hummed, and he heard her turn off her music, “I forgive you,” she said playfully, “I’ll be down in two minutes.”, “Can’t wait,” he responded, and she hung up.
He was staring off into the night sky as he heard her push the weight of the back doors and enter the night. She walked to him as she looked him up and down shamelessly. He straightened up, adjusting his hands around the neck of the bouquet, “You look so beautiful,” he said softly, making her smile even wider. “These are for you,” he added and extended the flowers in his hands towards her before she could even say anything. She cooed, tilting her head and looking over the flowers, “Thank you, baby”, she said in a tooth-achingly sweet voice, grabbing the bouquet and moving her hands to hold it in one of her arms as she wrapped the other around his shoulders, giving him a warm hug. He leaned down and happily wrapped his hands around her waist, pulling her into him further. The pet name made the blush on his cheeks obvious, but he was too content with himself to care.
As he opened the door for each of them, they got in the car. “I heard what you were playing in the background when I called,” he started, “and you have really good taste, put some of it on,” he said, and he opened Spotify on his car’s screen and started the engine. “That's high praise from you indeed,” she teased and leaned forward to put on music after she had put on her seatbelt. The drive was filled with quiet conversation and her directions on how to get to the warehouse.

Once they stopped at the barrier separating them and the huge building, she leaned over Huunjin’s torso and showed the security guard her ID, propping herself with her hand on his shoulder, making him smile like an idiot. The security guard scanned her ID, politely smiled, and wished them goodnight as he pushed the button to lift the barrier. He didn’t ask any questions, which Hunjin found a little weird considering it was just her and him at such an odd hour of the night. “He didn’t even look surprised to see us,” he mentioned as his eyes scanned the area for a parking spot. She scoffed to herself with a shy smile, “Most of my employees are used to my habit of giving them surprise visits to check on the quality of their work,” she stated while looking out the window, “I’m not the most laid back boss in most cases, they’re used to not questioning me.” Hyunjin glanced at her as he was maneuvering into a parking spot and smiled at her adorable expression, “Yeah, but that’s why you’re good at your job, pretty girl”. When he stopped the car, she quickly got out, not wanting him to see how furiously he had flustered her: his voice, the pet name, the reassurance, the way his fingers tilted the steering wheel so effortlessly under his palm.
When she unlocked the door and they walked in, the extremely tall ceilings were revealed. She gestured for him to follow her as they entered a specific room, where inside the jewelry was encased in glass boxes, polished to perfection. The jewelry for the winter collection didn’t have the typical winter collection- there was no light blue and navy stones. In reality, the color of the stones was actually the deep green of the needles on the coniferous trees. “The evergreen trees,” she mentioned while explaining the concept behind the decision, “Winter isn’t just snow, it’s a test to see who can hold their colour and who will let go of it, defeated.” God, he could listen to her talk all day.
With the continuation of their time in rooms such as that one, they talked about their jewelry, he ranted about all the little details he loved, and she gushed over her work on them. At some point, she even unlocked one of the cases and let him try a ring he fell in love with. A beautiful white gold ring, and the chalcedony stone on it glistened in the light, showing off its green webs delicately. In return, he asked her to try a pair of dangly earrings with deep green spinel stones on them. She agreed, and when she put them on, she held her hair up with her hands and posed for him jokingly by turning her head to the side, tilting it, and cocking her hip. He giggled as he stroked his jaw with the pointer finger and thumb of his hand, pretending to judge her performance.
After about an hour and a half of fooling around, she felt her stomach growl. “Ugh, I’m starving, maybe it’s time we get something to eat”, she said while putting some pieces they took out to observe closely back into their cases. “Oh yeah, I'm starving,” he agreed as he put the earring backs on a few pairs she tried on. After he did, he approached her slowly and carefully from behind. Putting a light, warm hand on her waist so as not to startle her. He then closed the distance and pressed his chest to her back. As his hands wrapped around her waist, she put hers on top of his. He let his head nuzzle in the crook of her neck, exactly where his hand had laid itself the other night at the event. She also tilted her head towards his, “I’m really enjoying myself,” she said quietly, almost in a shy voice. “Mhm, me too, and I can’t wait to continue this date,” he said with pure honesty as he lifted his head and met her eyes, lifting a finger and dragging it down the middle of her bottom lip.
