This is more of a silly question but I thought of it while I was watching my cat roll around on the floor. Is there a specific reason why some cats have white on their feet and chests if they have white areas in their coat? Like, is there some advantage to having socks and a bib or is it just how the genes worked out? Love it either way, 10/10 for evolution giving kitties little boots so they can sashay into mischief.

oh, not really; if anything, it probably actively detracts from their hunting ability since stark black and white tends to be much more obvious to prey (and predators) than dappled or striped brown patterns.

But the thing is, domestic cats don't really have to worry about that. Humans provide for them for the most part. We made them this way. We thought black and white is pretty, so we fed cats that were black and white. It's the same reason you'll spot a brown pigeon in a flock of grey pigeons at a train station: we made them this way.

It's basically their version of domestication syndrome. They've got the smaller brain and the larger pool of colors (especially a black and white pattern). This has resulted erroneously in people saying 'cats aren't as domesticated as dogs', but that's bullshit. They're domesticated differently, but not less.
