FEATURED ARTIST: Ander Mikalson is a sound artist whose practice incorporates different notions of collaboration and participation. In recent performances, participants sing or spontaneously generate the soundtrack to a film. Mikalson sets up a call-and-response with acquaintances across town and with strangers from around the world. She has collaborated with other artists, dancers, a poet, a teenager in Mexico City, a choir, a marching band, an astrophysicist and with her audience. Her open-ended way of working challenges the role hierarchical processes play in contemporary art, shifting focus to the importance of collective creativity.

Ander Mikalson (born 1983 in Santa Monica, CA; lives and works in New York City) received her MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and BA from the University of California Santa Barbara. Her performances have been shown at The Kitchen, New York City; Storm King Art Center, New Windsor, New York; The Art, Design & Architecture Museum, Santa Barbara, California; Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, Virginia; Churner & Churner Gallery, New York City; Queens Museum, Queens, New York; Temple Contemporary, Philadelphia; Institute of Contemporary Art, Portland, Minnesota, and Tensta Konsthall, Stockholm. Residencies include the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Queens Museum Studio Program, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Process Space and the Rauschenberg Foundation. Her projects have been supported by the Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant, Art Matters Foundation Grant, College Art Association Professional-Development Fellowship in the Visual Arts, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Graduate Fellowship.
