Moving Slow, Taking It Easy . Being down here in southern Louisiana makes that easy to do. . . Took my time yesterday exploring Chalmette Battlefield—where the Battle of New Orleans was fought—and the neighboring National Cemetery, and failed miserably at trying to sing Battle of New Orleans while doing a video of the grounds. . “In 1814 we took a little trip along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip we took a little bacon and we took a little beans and we caught the bloody British in a town in New Orleans...” . I need to practice that on guitar to do it justice if I’m going to sing it. . Decided to stay over so I could ride the ferry across the Mississippi from Chalmette to lower Algiers. . Exciting to ride across the Big Muddy on a ferry, but ultimately not as interesting as the more river-intimate ferry ride across the Ohio last month on the #andersonferry with Captain @donaldphelps. Wish I knew the name of his capable deckhand that day. She steered me right. Next time I go across on the Anderson Ferry I’d like to interview them both, as well as @riverrat1989. . The Chalmette-Algiers ferry is massive in comparison (first two images) and once away from the landing and the Captain put the power to her, she moved across the Mississippi fast and easy. . I have vid to post but will have to wait for a better connection, or better yet, a place with fast WiFi. I’m killing my data plan. . Had hopes to camp tonight way south of I-10 in Bayou country, and get some solid paddling in tomorrow in gator waters. Got some great tips and ideas on places from Kelly at the Cajun Bayou Visitor’s Center. What a very cool little place, chock full of just the kind of stuff I like to learn. . With big weather moving in, though, and not being already in camp, I’ll wait ‘til tomorrow or Sunday to set up somewhere. No sense rolling in after dark and not being able to paddle or explore on foot once morning comes. . Moving slow and takin’ thangs easy.
