Meigetsu wo tottekurero to naku-ko kana...

"Get me the harvest moon!" cries the crying child...

"All things are "ichi-go ichi-e" (one time, one meeting). In tea ceremony, the person performing the ceremony, the guest, the moment... we are taught to think that this is the first and last meeting of all those things. If you think of it that way, then you realise that all of the things that you take for granted will not be around forever."

It's the "Furisode Fire".  The daughter of a small Asakusa trading company fell in love at first sight with a beautiful samurai. They say she died of unrequited love. They also say that afterwards the girls who wore her kimono died one after another. And, when they burned the kimono at the temple to get rid of it, the burning kimono rose up high into the sky and burned Edo to the ground. Because she fell in love at first sight... Edo became a sea of flames. The heart of a woman in love... is terrifying.

I asked him to create a moon-themed sweet, which was a major theme that year. (He made) A ship. A crescent moon which resembled the hull of a ship, floating above waves of clouds. It's an exquisite design, don't you think? It's an image from a Kakinomoto no Hitomaro poem. Having that sort of playful spirit is extremely important in tea ceremony.
