On this day in 1979, the last Shah of Iran, Mohammed Reza Shah Pahlavi, left Iran to begin living in exile in Egypt, in an attempt to appease the growing unrest of the Islamic Revolution. Pahlavi's father had been forced to abdicate the throne by Allied forces during World War II, and the Shah was viewed by many Iranians as a Western puppet. Discontent with his corruption, lavish lifestyle, and Western influence, coupled with the growing popularity of the Islamic dissident and opposition leader Ayatollah Khomeini led to Pahlavi fleeing the country, he would die in exile in 1980. This song was written in tribute to the Shah by the singer Andranik.
