“did you know that australia is home to the smallest freshwater fish in the world?” a pause. he thought they’d been looking at him, expecting him to speak, so he blurted out the first thing that came to mind. but maybe they hadn’t been looking. maybe he’d made it weird. he shifted his weight, letting his gaze fall back down to the ground. “um - sorry, i - i just think it’s interesting.”

“oh, we’ve met.” it was an inane observation, one more for himself than for her. “you’re –” a pause while he combed his memory, floundering for a moment in an effort to avoid embarrassing himself by calling her by the wrong name. “aisling?” god, he hoped that was right. “we talked only very briefly, but... how are you?”

“oh – sorry!” he had to stop walking and reading at the same time; it never ended well. he looked up, met the eyes of the person he’d almost run into, and felt his heart drop. of all the people he could’ve run into, why did it have to be timotei’s ex-fiancée? “io. um... hello. you, um – you look well. how are you?”

"so... do you like argentina?” this lunch was bound to be spectacularly awkward. he hadn’t made a habit of chasing after nikolina, and she hadn’t made a habit of chasing after him. but they were both here. it seemed worth trying. “i’m sorry i didn’t say hello on the cruise. it was very overwhelming. there were many people.” he’d forgotten how utterly miserable events like those were. at least his fish facts had been well received.

“oh! you’re the - you’re - you were at the party.” he needed to get better with names. “i’m - we talked, um. very briefly. about - mostly about clownfish. i didn’t know you would be in argentina.” was this man important? andrei spent a moment considering. he didn’t recognize his name or face, but then, he’d been out of the game a long time. for all he knew, he was the king of some distant land, and mitko would have andrei’s head for not knowing it. “it’s nice to see you, though. i, um - there aren’t very many familiar faces, here. for me.”

it felt strange to stand outside luca’s door, waiting to be admitted. it felt a little bit like twenty years ago. and then the door was opening, and andrei managed a smile that was only half uncomfortable. “hello,” he said. it was nice to see luca after so many years. andrei shifted his weight, a little nervous that he might be unwelcome. “i was hoping you weren’t busy. i’m sorry to come by unannounced. i just wanted to say hello. i have... missed you.”

“ah - you’re here, too.” he supposed it shouldn’t have been a surprise. nearly everyone was here, the hungarian prince was clearly no exception. “sorry, um. hello.” he needed to work on being friendlier. “how are you?” no, that wasn’t right either, his voice was still far too flat. “it’s good to see you again. it’s been a long while.” there, that was better. polite, at the very least.
