And if you go chasing rabbits

Bernie wondered how mad anyone might be if she had said no. If she had simply accepted the failing grade and refused to show up to this absolutely insane assignment. They couldn’t really be allowed to do this, could they? To send students out into the Sealed Forest on their own and expect them to just...to just fend for themselves!?
Bernadetta didn’t know what was worse. How mad her father would be if he heard she participated and died or if he heard she didn’t participate and embarrassed him.
She wished she was one of the hunters. At least that wouldn’t have been too bad. Bernie was good with a bow, and she could’ve just hung out at the edge of the forest and came back to tell them she couldn’t find anyone! It would’ve been easy! But no, she had to be prey and run around all terrified at the thought of someone hunting her oh Goddess what if it was someone actually good?!
(Worse, what if it was someone bad who didn’t know how to aim or shoot a bow properly and they tried to shoot her to stop and they missed and shot Bernie somewhere vital and she died because that would be just her luck to die in such a sad, pathetic way, oh Bernie how were you going to get out of this one you unlucky, unloved, stupid girl!?)
Bernadetta took a step and a branch cracked with a loud sound under her foot. She squealed and froze, quickly clapping her hands over her mouth as she looked around. Did they hear that? They couldn’t have heard that. There was no way anyone heard that, right?
