Admittedly, Alex might be skipping a few steps.
It seems inconsequential, to need to be dating Nicky before asking him to marry him. Alex has had relationships before; passionate ones, tender ones, playful ones, but they never seemed to be everything combined. There’s everyone else, and then there’s Nicky.
It will sound crazy to everyone else, he knows, but they all think he’s a little crazy, so he might as well do it anyway.
