“It’s now 5 weeks since president Cyril Ramaphosa ordered a strict lockdown. Today, the official death toll for the virus is just over 100.

Impressive when you think that at first, South Africa was following Britain’s infection curve. (…)

South Africa did have another curious advantage over other countries.”

Tom Boyles:

“We got an outbreak among the more wealthy people, who had brought the virus back with them on planes from Europe and elsewhere.”

Andrew Harding:

“Because this is such a polarized society, those who were infected didn’t really rub shoulders with poorer South Africans.

Dr. Tom Boyles is a British infectious disease specialist based in Johannesburg.”

Tom Boyles:

“So you had this wealthy population with the virus.

We were expecting it to make a jump to the poorer areas, which are only a kilometer away sometimes.

In the poor areas, you’ve got people traveling to work in the rich areas.

I think what actually happened is that jump was less efficient than many were expecting.”
